I know. The point I was trying to make was that there are enough currently produced, modern, third party lenses to make a viable FF lens kit even if Pentax did not produce a FF lens. Based on the number of folks who pointed out the number of FF Pentax lenses, I obviously failed to explain myself very well.

I was just speculating that a camera company (in this changed world) does not HAVE to produce lenses for their cameras because third party support is very good and of very good quality. I personally doubt Pentax or anyone else would do so, but they could if they wanted to try something new.

I've used some cameras for scientific purposes (Princeton Instruments) that, IIRC, require third-party lenses.

For consumer-stuff I doubt that would happen in the near future, but who knows. If Sony, with a lot of electronic experience, was coming into the market right now they might've just produced a micro-4/3rds camera without producing any lenses.

Pentax is still enough of an optics-company that they will build both cameras and optics. Voigtlander, Tamron, (Leica!) aren't electronics companies, they're optical companies. Who are electronics producers but aren't optical producers? Apple? Who wants a DSLR with one button (maybe a lot of people?)? Google? One of the smaller Japanese players?

Haha.
If it were made with intuitive multi-touch screen-back made of specialised tempered glass and have WiFi and 4G support, it might just sell.
Only it wouldn't do well with the rigors of outdoor photography. Apple screen repairers would have big waiting lists...

Would a camera company take a chance and release a new FF camera without any native FF lens support?

Before you post all the old lenses that are FF compatible, yes I know, I have many of them. But this is a new age with new technology and sensors that are ever more particular about the glass in front of them.

But if you get past the point of having the same name on the glass as on the body what about this:
Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Personally I think that is a pretty impressive FF lineup that anyone should be proud to shoot with. And at a fairly reasonable price.

If you want to go a step further add in a re-vamped DFA 31, 43 and 77 plus DFA 50 macro and DFA 100 macro. What else would we need?

What do you think? Does Pentax have the guts to break the 'rules'?
Fuji just launched highly sucsessfull rangefinder systemwith 3 prime lenses.
FA Limiteds are just fine and are currently in production.

Some FF dSLRs will detect the lens used and "auto crop" the image to APS size for non FF lenses. That gives a useful transition to people with a collection of DA style lenses, and could allow time for Pentax to develop FF lenses.
My full frame Sony NEX-VG900 has an auto full frame /APS-C mode setting in the menu along with full frame and APS-C modes. The only APS-C lenses I have used on it so far are my PK mount 10-24mm Tamron , Sony 16-50mm OSS PZ and 55-210mm OSS .

All you'd have to do to make any Pentax FF lens ever made functional would be to turn off shake reduction. That's the only thing that might be a problem. ANd for anyone with Sigma OS lenses, even that wouldn't be a problem.

Or crop just a little. That's if coverage really is a problem.

The thing I'm worried about are all these rumors that say Pentax is going to introduce a new mount. I have some beautiful lenses which I thought would work together with the upcoming (sooner or later) Pentax FF (FA31, FA43, FA77, DA*55, Maybe 40XS).
Because of these rumors I'm close to buy a Nikon FF camera. As this would trigger quite an investment in lenses, equipment and so on, I'd probably never return if there should be a Pentax FF featuring the "old" familiar k-mount.
So how credible are these rumors saying that Pentax is going to introduce a new mount for their FF-Cameras?

It might be a problem - that isn't a certainty, it is based on conjecture that Pentax FF capable lenses produce an image circle that is only just big enough to cover 36X24mm sensors - when in fact many of them have imaging circles bigger than that*. Also stopping a lens down does slightly increase the size of the imaging circle projected by the lens, this is an effect that has been exploited by large format photographers for decades.

*it may only be a few mm but the IS mechanism in Pentax DSLRs doesn't move around that much really.

All of them are baseless, completely made up, BS or plain FUD.

I am not worried about it at all. Producing a FF without full-functionality to the K-mount is suicide. Producing a FF without the actual K-mount is pretty silly.

I believe there's a FF coming. It just seems like the recent interviews etc make it seem like a 2014 product.

Greetings all,

I came across this link and thought it may be useful for those of you who are awaiting the Pentax FF release. I'm quite sure Pentax will release a line of FF lenses with its FF new flag ship product, but for now third party options are sometime better options than what most camera manufacture usually delivers on retail shelves.

http://www.neocamera.com/list_lenses.php?brand=sigma&mount=pentax

Enjoy,
