Full Frame Feature Hopes

We can all dream right?

I wanted to start a thread where we could list and share some ideas and "hopes" as to what Pentax could and should put in to their future flagship Full Frame DSLR. I would like to keep this kinda realistic, so nothing so obscure that it's not even logical or relevant, like "wireless charging". Wireless charging is cool for a phone that only sips battery power, but not for a large DSLR. Also, try and "quote" the previous post's ideas and then add yours. This way we can hopefully avoid duplicates. This thread should be fun and interesting.

Here are a few of the "basic" ones. If they hit this or something close, they will have a very competitive product:

1. True Full Frame 36x24, 24.3Mpix sensor (same or similar as D600)
2. High RAW color depth and Dynamic range of 14.4 EV or better
3. Fabled automatic "crop" for DA Lenses (1.4 crop factor to produce a 25x18, 18Mpx RAW file)
4. Two versions of sensor, one with and one without the anti-aliasing filter (like the K5ii and K5iis)
5. Dual SD card slots capable of using SDHC, SDXC and up to UHS card
6. HUGE, Fast and intelligent buffer. (With a huge and fast internal and INTELEGENT buffer, this rig could take large amounts of successive shots without slowing down or skipping a beat. Imagine firing 25 or 30 shots, lifting your finger off the shutter and instantly being able to shoot more shots, NO WRITE WAITING).
7. High frames per second, at least 6 FPS. (The large buffer would help with this)
8. Of course a strong magnesium (or aluminum) frame/chassis.
9. Fully weather and dust sealed (even tighter than the K5ii)
10. Still have Sensor Shift shake reduction. (level, composition adjust ect)
11. Built in GPS (with automatic location Metadata tagging).
12. Built in WiFi? (kinda torn on this one, but still think it's good for wireless tethering possibilities and WiFi location tagging)

Here are some more "crazy" ideas.

1. I would like to see Pentax embrace their past. Include all the exposure data for all K-mount and M42 lenses within the camera to be called out on demand. For example, You put on an old m42 135mm 2.8 super takumar and "select" it wit in the internal database, set the Aperture ring, select the same aperture on the body and BOOM, the body start giving you exposure information for ISO and Shutter (even auto Exposure in Av mode!). Imagine how much easier all those old lenses would be to use. (Exposure wise.)
2. Focus peaking during movie mode and Live view
3. Better Movie mode option (Or any would be a start. How about H.264 like the rest of the world)

What else would you like to see?

I honestly donīt care for any item on your list. I would accept a larger sensor as long as they keep using the same body as K-5.
But I do like the idea of a database of lenses so that the info sticks as exif.

The K-30 on use H.264, and no, the rest of the world does not. Some still cling to AVCHD.

And you are looking at a $2,000 camera at least, maybe closer to $2,500.

Carrrlangas;

Not sure how you can "not care for any items" on the list and want to "keep using the same body as K-5". Most of the items I put on the list were carryovers from the K-5. I love my K-5. However, if Pentax simply slapped a FF sensor into a K-5 body and did nothing else I believe it would be a total flop. Pentax has been know and is trying to be different then the rest (Canikon). The Q line is a testament to that. Their DSLR line up (K-5ii/s K-5, K-30, K-50, k-500) is BEGGING for a Bigger better flagship. I don't think a simple FF K-5 will do it. There needs to be more. I was hoping this Thread could tap into ideas of the shooters for what that "More" could and should be.

K-5ii/iis is .avi. For some reason the K-30 is the only Pentax DSLR that is NOT .avi

And Yes it would be worth all of $2,000- 2,500. That is a good price point for first showing. It would settle out at about $1,800-$2,000 after a few months directly competing with Canikon FF offerings, but haveing more "pentaxian" features.

How about offering a few ideas on those "pentaxian" features?

My wish of the FF include:
On the basis of K5IIs...
1. Keep K-mount, and mirror, continue to improve AF in all lighting condition;
2. Removed AA filter and include in-body moire removal, and CA removal;
3. Full manual control on video (at least have 1080p 60fps);
4. Interchangeable use of AA and lithium battery like K-30/K-50. Allow user select APSC mode or FF mode (not auto select based on lens attached, so you can use apsc mode on FF lens);
5. Allow all sort of customization with buttons (raw button, green button, LV button, would like to add a SR button) and menu (borrow from Ricoh experience), these are just software;
6. Open up API to allow all sort of creativity to use the camera hardware and software.
7. Do not let Marc Newson design the camera (kidding!).

I think #5 and #6 will be more than enough to grab attention.

I really like #5 & #6 as well! The more we can customize the camera the better.

My list is very small:
1. Finder like old Pentax film SLRs with plain ground-glass option for better manual focus with high-speed lenses. (No more tunnel finders.)
2. Un-crippled mount to use old K-mount lenses (pre -A) as intended.
All else is optional for me, including auto-focus, burst modes, different metering patterns, and especially video.

It would be nice to go back to an LX-style meter off the shutter/sensor instead of at the prism where it clutters things up. (Leica meters off the shutter with the M9.)

Rather than a laundry list, I think they could go two ways, and I'd be happy with either:

1. A digital K-1000; a basic no-bones FF thing that would be intended for manual shooting. Recapture the market of every single student and enthusiast out there. A sort of 'instant classic' slam-dunk.

2. A monster feature machine, which the k5 family almost is, but FF, pro video and audio monitoring / leveling, yadda yadda. I like the suggestions for a huge buffer and dual SD's with write interleaving. Waaaay better predictive AF. Faster sync. New pro flash. Huge OVF. That kind of stuff.

I'm constantly surprised that the k5 has features that the others don't. Little things, but important.

The templates are already there for a Pentax FF: all they need to do is simply make a Nikon D600 or a Canon 6D clone.

No one would complain about seeing either with a Pentax logo on it, as it were.

Mirrorless that works with most FF & APS-C lenses using low cost adapters, FF & APS-C mode , adjustable angle 2.4M dot OLED EVF with eye sensor , 30-1/8000 shutter speed and 1080p24/1080p60 with uncompressed HDMI output.

To hell with it's features, I'm still hoping for a FF.

Preferably in my lifetime.

True, most of them are shared with the K-5 but for the rest, I see them as specialist needs. I donīt want a camera full of features Iīd like to havee, but actually use once or twice to fool arround. Maybe if they kept a "low spec" option, as current K-5. Also, I said larger sensor, not specifically FF. APS-H would do it for me.

On other topic, I kept thinking about the in-camera lens database. This could already be possible at least for A series lenses. If you input the correct focal length, then the camera could guess which lens it is, knowing minimum aperture... Wait, only for primes if there is any overlap with a zoom...

Well, those are two features that woud make me buy the upgrade right away...
...Ok, after raising the money and selling my current body
