Lenses at launch !!

Hi there,

When (not if) the new full frame is launched, it will probably also be launched alongside with 2 or 3 brand spanking new DFA lenses.

The lenses available for any new camera, if chosen wisely, will add greatly to the appeal of the system. For example Olympus e-1 launched with three mid priced zooms, the Fuji X-system launched with three primes. In both cases, the lenses added to the appeal to and complimented the camera.

So the question is, if Pentax were to launch the full frame with 2 or 3 new lenses - what should they be?

dfa 31, dfa 77, dfa 43.

A fitting way to herald the coming digital FF.

I just saw an old ad for the film MX. It said Pentax produced 18 new M series lenses for use on the MX. Pic below related.

Circa 2013, how people's expectations of Pentax have changed. Now we only expect three lenses that are merely warmed-over versions of existing glass.

Fine:

I expect a DFA*24-70 F2, a DFA*21 F1.8, a DFA*70-200 F2.8, a DFA 24-105 WR, and a DFA 400 F5.6 WR.

A DA* 300mm f/4 plus 1.4x Teleconverter is a 420mm f/5.6. Here is what it looks like at full aperture. This lens is already an FF lens.

(My tests of my DA and DA* lenses on a 35mm camera are here).

I suspect that for some of us a 1.4x Teleconverter would play a part if we were able to buy an FF Pentax.

Unless we're getting a 1.4x TC with WR, it's not quite the same. And I was thinking of a non* version to make it cheaper if possible.

Remember - back then the owner of the brand was Asahi Optical Co. - and lenses were their main business. Now all camera companies are basically electronics companies, so selling the camera is the main business.

Also, in the MX era there were few zooms available, as lens companies preferred to sell you a bunch of single-focal-length lenses (we never called them "primes" - just "lenses" - while zooms were...zooms). Now you only need an 18-55 and 55-300, and save the extra money for a new body when yours goes obsolete in a year or two. When film cameras lasted decades there was more incentive to sell lenses.

I expect an eye-watering price for that lot!

Some interesting replies - I suspect that when the full frame camera is released, it could likely be a full frame k50 in which case the lenses will be more consumer than enthusiastic. My list would be 24-90, 70-300 and a 28-200.

However if a semi pro full frame is what gets realesed than most likely be 24-70/2.8 70-210 and a 100-400.

Yeah, what they will need at minimum on FF is the trinity of a 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and a fast 50 (or near equivalents). All with fast, decent AF motors.

A wide, a standard, and a short tele. I would like:

24mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4
[follow by 35mm f1.4, 135mm f2]

But most likely it will come with a zoom lens.

Absolutely, these zooms are basic lenses that both amateurs and professionals will want. The boutique prime lenses can come later. I think that Pentax could do very well selling updated versions of the FA Limiteds with new coatings, SDM and weather sealing, but would they fiddle with the optical formulas? Regardless, I would consider trading up.
