An all too often push-lag-click changed to a push-click. And my need to chimp the shot decreased which instilled more confidence was my experience. I realize everyones milage will vary.

Yes, I miss that very much. And 'very much' becomes 'extremely' when I look at Nikon's VR lens prices.

Agreed. I miss it a lot. Which is one major reason why I'm looking at a 70-200 f2.8 vrii to replace my 80-200 2.8

Went to store today to actually hold a Canon 6D (they don't have D600, as they said it was 'discontinued').... honestly, the body feel flimsy like those T3i series... it has a 24-105 f4 (I don't remember clearly) lens on it. Missing a 2nd wheel at the back is weird. To select focus point, I need to press a button, then either move the font dial (move focus point left and right), or use the four directional wheel. Honestly, the thumb to move from pressing focus point and to the wheel is, awkward. Buttons like ISO, metering mode, shooting mode, etc, felt a little cheap too. For some reason, I think they definitely can make the body smaller with tighter tolerance.

Well, will try to get a hold on a D600/D610.
I have the same feeling about lacking the back-edial. Simple things like changing ISO will take two separate movement of the index finger on a 5D whereas on the K-5 the same operation can be done with thumb and index finger at the same time. I don't think I will get used to a single edial any more...

try that same method of changing iso on D800/D600. Still my biggest gripe about the D600 and one of very few gripes about the D800 (weight is the big one) is the ISO button placement. There is no better place than where it is on the K5.

Circuit board, displays, battery, etc. all take up space.

But across all brands the issue is the sensor.

Film was flat and pressed onto a plate. It has some elasticity even.

But sensors cannot move if they are to work properly. They need to be protected against all sorts of shocks and damped against vibrations. Today's DSLR's are bulked up to protect the sensor and its surrounding circuitry in a manner that was never required with film. Even the space gained from loss of the spool and roll container is more than offset by the effort to place a small computer into the camera body.

A for the glass, again the sensor plays a role, as does the new medium of digital viewing. The digital sensor is flat and light needs to hit as near perpendicular as possible. With film an oblique angle still had more than enough of the right wavelength to trigger the chemicals, so a change in optics is necessary for digital. Wider lenses need to have a greater iris and other adjustments as a result, not to mention the capacity to pixel peep frame edge to frame edge invites widespread criticism where sensors are unforgiving.

So we get a little more glass. I'm just touching on a few of the issues. There's more.
Basicly you are telling us that seeing it from a technical point that a sensor APS-H sized would be the better solution for Pentax to bring better Image Quality to the K-mount.

You must be the most vocal proponent of the APS-H sensor size on the entire Internet . However, I think it would be excellent for Pentax, because most of the limited primes would work on APS-H; and they'd be able to maintain a smaller camera, with SR.

I agree. A 28 MP APS-H sensor would absolutely rock. I just don't think it will ever happen. Although with the Q they did go to a larger sensor to try and increase IQ, it's not like they haven't done it before.

Perhaps consider starting out with a few D-primes. Smaller, more economical and they will give you more time and experience with the system to consider what lenses you'll want to save and pay big money for. I can't say if that's a more economical path in the long ( eg buying a focal length twice) but it gets you up and running.
+1

Nikon 20 f/2.8D ... $285 used
Nikon 50 f/1.8D... $109 new
Nikon 85 f/1.8D ... $290 used
Nikon 105 f/2.5 AIS (MF) ... $100 used
Nikon 180 f2.8 AF-N ... $450 used
Nikon 300 f/4 AF... $450 used

(Note: these are very sharp, impressive on the D800 - trust me! )

= ~ $1700

Then, if you want:

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 ... $300 used
Sigma 100-300 f4 HSM ... $800 used (maybe? maybe more? hard to price this these days)

= ~ $1100

Primes + zooms == $2900

One of the reasons I'd love to see a Pentax FF body is the wonderful used lenses available for it. I know Pentax would want us to buy new.... but think how you could start out economically, yet brilliantly, in K-mount FF.

Got mine for 475. My friend bought one from Keh for 650. 800 is too high. Haven't seen the 300/4 for that cheap. That's my new target for the lens. I'd love to get it for that price.

Edit, I see, an older version. I'll have to check that out.

Have you seen what the prices of used Pentax lenses run, at least ones with auto focus? They aren't cheap, that's for certain and if Pentax released a full frame camera, the prices would just climb. Even lenses like the FA 35, which in its day sold for 250 dollars now sells for 375 to 400...

I was just remembering the J Geils cover of First I look at the Purse I'm sure there is a full frame / APS-C version of this...

It's odd the OP hasn't worked out that there are more affordable FF lenses out there, for example 85mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8's rather than the f1.4 ones, also 70-200mm f4's.
Once you mix in second hand offerings AND Tamron/Sigma I think most people could whip up a pretty decent FF lens set up for a heck of a lot less than the OP suggests.

I would say though that until the price of FF comes down to a level which is genuinely affordable (say £1000 roughly and below) then the current 6d/D600 offerings are not really as cheap as they should be. One wonders how much this FF K mount body will be, I suspect it's priced a bit more than some might think.

There is a better chance of Pentax coming out with a full frame than a 28MP APS-H IMHO.

Here is the same question in an other language. For our Finnish audience:

p.s. Järkee Vai Ei
translates (loosely) to: Does it make sense, or to: where is your brain?
