Beautiful pictures and I'm happy to see that old glass does a great job on digital FF as well.
I'll hold onto my old glass and... well... hope .

Fantastic results for the 31mm. im dying to use mine on a full frame now... :/

Yes, the intent of my post is not to draw ppl away from Pentax.
Rather its the opposite.

Its better to let ppl know that the lenses they have, work on FF.
And those I've tried so far work well.
I'd rather they keep their lenses and either hold on till a Pentax FF or get a 'FF something' with adapter to tide over than to sell off at a loss and never to come back. (or come back as Trolls )

Nice images and thanks for posting.

That took time and effort and I don't think that there's any doubt about the quality of pentax glass and you just delivered the goods with those samples.

This is a good thread, and I don't think you need to justify it any further.

Seriously, I cant wait to see more results. Maybe you should consider taking a few days off work and just walking around taking pics

Btw, could you post a quick list of the lens that you are planning to test. Thanks again in advance!

Thank you guys for the encouragement.

I really am glad I stayed on with Pentax and accumulated the lenses.
The small, good lenses make a lot of sense for me on a small FF camera like the A7, even more so than its own native lenses.
I do hope the Pentax one will be round the corner.

So keep your hopes up (mine too) and hold on to those lenses.

The boss wouldn't take too kindly to that, and I'll end up with 100% free time to do photo taking

As for what lenses, I will certainly cover the FA ltds.
Here's a teaser to what else....

Fanastic...if I ever won the lottery, an A7 or A7R would be high on the list for my manual glass. I can't wait to see the images from the super taks.

Testing out an old dog of a lens.

Soligor 17/4 (M42 mount)

@f11

The lens is uncommon with very little info on the internet.
I suspect its a version of the Vivitar 17/3.5 which is more common.

I'm a bit surprised that this old 3rd party lens manages to cling on to digital 24mp.
Edges are not that great, but I guess it will have to do as my widest lens until I get/find something else.
Keystone distortion is the photographer's fault
It does have a mustache distortion profile that is be harder to correct.
The thing is that on aps-c, the 'mustache' is cropped off, so the distortion is more like a standard barrel distortion.
But on FF, the full extent of the len's distortion characteristic is shown.

I left the full size image on my flickr for those who want a reference.

Edit :
Hey! The LR4.0 distortion profile for the Zeiss 18/3.5 seems to fit pretty well.

I'd love to see how some of the Takumars perform. The 35/3.5 or 28/3.5 perhaps.

Takumars may take a while.
I used them a lot on the 5D, so now its the k-mounts turn for fun/testing.

Generally, I'd expect the takumars to do well based on the 5D usage.

I do have the 35/3.5.
Nice lens on aps-c, sharp, contrasty and wonderfully small.
I'll see how to schedule it into the lens trails.

SMC K24/2.8

@f8

As usual, I left a full sized sample on flickr.

No much to complain about this lens for me, one of the smaller slr 24/2.8 out there typical of Pentax, flare resistant smc coating, wide enough for quite a bit of things on FF.
Sharp (very) in the center wide open and overall sharp stopped down to f5.6 and above.

This lens can do much more of course.
I will update with f2.8 and other f-stops when the pictures at those settings come about.

Edit :14Jan2014

@f2.8

@f5.6

This was a favourite for me on aps-c, on FF, I do think its even better now.
Very portable as its so small, and now, its even wider at 24mm.
Bokeh is generally ok too, which is already good compared to may wide angles of the 24-28mm focal length,

Do you happen to have a Helios 44 series lens (Its the 40-2's little brother) ? I am dying to see how it performs on a full frame (with respect to the swirly bokeh).

grrrrr Pinholecam you must stop this immediately!
You already got me into this entire Pentax Q mess with your unbiased, down to earth reportage and now you're at it again, fanning the embers of lba and gas. STOP this madness

We often hear the claim/argument that legacy lenses are not good enough for digital FF.
Resolution is not there and poor edges being the primary reasons.
In the past, it was hard to confirm and so this passed on from one person to another (becoming a truth in itself).
There is evidence that some of the lenses work well enough since they have been adapted on 5D and 5DII, but these 2 cameras have issues with some lenses (esp. k-mounts) which limit what can be tried out.

But now, with the Sony A7, all the Pentax K-mount lenses can be tried out on a digital FF camera.
So this will be what I will try to do here with all my lenses, spanning M42 > K > M > A >FA and ltds.

I declare this right now too.
THIS IS NOT A "i'VE JUMPED SHIP AND ALL YOU GUYS HERE ARE SUCKERS!" POST
I have no hate for Pentax (still love it and using it)

THIS IS A "DOES THE M42 AND K-MOUNT LENS I HAVE WORK REASONABLY WELL ON DIGITAL FF?" THREAD.

I also won't go into promoting the A7 here on a Pentax Forum (leave that to the haters that linger here... )
Nor will I discuss the camera on this thread (avoid as much as possible)
Its about M42 and K-mount lenses in the FF context.

Photos will all be on my Flickr at full res.
JPG OOC, possibly cropped a bit for composition and/or adjusted for exposure.
AFAIK for now, the Sony in camera JPGS are way overcooked.
Take them as you will, (sorry, I won't provide RAW, too little time and lazy to do all that; and its not about the camera anyway)
(pls be merciful about the poor composition and all that )

Lets start with........

Kiron/Vivitar 28/2 (55mm filter thread; K-mount)
I've not found a hood for this lens that I can directly cap on while not vignetting the corners, so no hood used for the shots.

#1

f2; showing the FOV of 28mm at about 1.5-2m working distance.

#2

f2; 30-50cm away

#3

f2; for small objects

#4

f4;

#5

f5.6

#6

f8

Overall, pretty busy bokeh to me.
No glaringly bad edges or corners.
Sides may be a bit softer, but really slight.
Flare control is not too good imho. (almost a given for non-SMC legacy 3rd party stuff)

Pls review 100% from my flickr.
I really don't have the time to do 100% crops (apologies in advance)

Hope I can go on with all the lenses....
Man! uploading full size picts is so slow.
What kind of plant is #4. Looks creepy.
