Here's the thing, though. I have no doubt that there will continue to be plenty of photographers who are interested in, and use their camera's mechanics to their full advantage, but probably only a fraction of those people will care about the 'black magic' that goes into capturing and storing digital images. Because no matter how technically good a photographer a person may be, as soon as you start using words like quantum efficiency and photoelectric effect, they'll likely just shut off.
It's not the capturing or storing that matters.

These days it is the sharing.

I picked up my first camera, a Pentax K100d 7 years ago, been shooting with Pentax cameras since, latest is a K-5.

Last week, I decided to switch to a Canon 6d, and I was reminded of this thread. I was used to the 1.5x FoV of my lenses and I have to do backwards conversion now when looking for lenses.

I'll never forget my first foray into medium format. I had shot plenty of 35mm and never owned anything longer than a 210mm. Since there was no local source, I relied on mail order. Up to this point, I still only had the kit 75mm and that was it. So, without giving it much thought, I saw a deal in a magazine (remember ordering from those?) for a 8+ condition used Pentax A series 645 300mm and ordered it the minute I saw the add and was so tickled it was still available when I called.

Nowadays with the internet, you have time to make up your mind because there are multiple sources coming daily, if you miss a deal, there will likely be another deal tomorrow. Back then, you had weeks for the magazine to go to print, a walk-in client or someone who got their magazine first to beat you to the buy. So when your mailman came with the latest mag, you had to make up your mind quick to even have half a chance!

At any rate, I got my 300MM 645 lens in the mail, it was a beast, as I knew it would be, and I was so excited. I mounted it on my camera, loaded a 12 shot film back and looked through the view finder for my first victim. And then, it hit me... um...nope, not much reach with this thing. Heh. heh. I knew on some level that there was a conversion factor, but until I looked through that viewfinder for the first time, I didn't appreciate the scope of the issue, and that I had essentially just bought a 180mm equivelent lens in my 35mm format mindset.

It's easy to criticize and laugh now with all the experience at our fingertips and the internet, and say gee what an idiot Eric was, but hey, I was still pretty young and foolish, what can I say. I was working in a vaccuum, without anyone to really teach me at the time. Turned out that the 300mm was a nice Zoo lens, very sharp and great colors. Actually was also great for shooting from the back of a big church at weddings. But wildlife or birding? Not so much...
