24mp vs 36mp

What is more important to you in a FF camera.. More pixels from a 36mp sensor or less iso noise from a 24mp sensor?

I've tried the current-gen 16, 24, and 36-megapixel sensors and they're all pretty good. Honestly, my favorite so far is the 36Mp one because it's the only one that has a noticeable advantage over APS-C at low ISOs. The K-3 vs D600 comparison is extremely close until you really crank up the ISO. The 16-megapixel FF chip has extremely low noise out-of-camera, which is nice, but I'm not a sports shooter.

I voted 24mpix thinking 36mpix is too much, but if I had a choice and money wasn't an option I'd probably pick the 36mpix actually. I wouldn't buy a more expensive camera just for extra mpix though.
A little off topic however, would a larger sensor and increased gaps between photosites increase the likelihood of moire? I only ask because Nikon released the D600 without an AA filterless option yet the K-3 is very moire resistant even with the AA simulator off. Or it could just be a Nikon marketing tactic of course.

More megapickles for me. I can always crop, and I imagine that pixel density matters more.

24mp is more 'sane'
1. Enough to print big
2. Easier to handle and store
3. Enough for most enthusiasts
4. Less issues with legacy lenses (in fact its GOOD)
5. Less punishing on lens (esp. edges)
6. Less punishing on technique
7. Less demanding vs real work shooting conditions (eg. moving/shifting subjects or photographer)
8. Enough MP for the usual crops for composition; aspect ratios
9. Can still be downsampled to yield better 12-16mp file
10. Cheaper

Edit :
There is also a good niche for Pentax to slot into that is left out in the 24mp FF segment.
All offerings now are 20-24mp FF "You don't deserve better" offerings.
Meaning that they are made to be lower end with less features and cheaper than the higher end offering.

So a Pentax FF, 24mp no-AA with SR blur, SR, -3ev AF, all cross point AF, etc (basically 24mp FF K3), can come in as an attractive option against competitors who have to leave stuff out to make the higher end model look better.

On the 36mp front, the D800e has everything plus the kitchen sink thrown in (including branding and rich buyers who would rather buy a known name),which will be hard to compete against.

I would be happy with either, but would lean to the 24mp format. I agree with the points pinholecam provided, and would add that every time I have had a noticeable increase to the number of megapixels in a new camera, I have also had to shell out for a computer upgrade to keep up with the RAW processing.

That's the reason why I'm skeptical of Pentax FF...

I agree with you. The current APS-C sensors are really good. Pentax would need to bring something to the FF table that's more than just a "me too" product.

I voted for 24mp...
Long ago, 6mp is just enough, then suddenly upgraded to 14mp and to 16mp, which are really huge files especially that I always shoot in RAW format... I work as a photojournalist (also shoots for commercial) and photography is my life where I literally go out and shoot everyday - as in everyday... So, with my workflow and (imagine) with a 24mp sensor, that would take up a disk space fast more so with a 36mp...
Hmmm... Two system would be good, 24mp for everyday or fast-phase shooting, and 36mp for those commercial shoots...
If Pentax ever brings out a FF camera, two choices would be good just like what Sony did - a7 for speed and a7r for detail...

definitely 36 mp is a good choice, in this case if you use it in crop mode you still get like 15mp.

I voted 24 MP. The current two high ISO performance and high FPS full frames that are available in the market are Canon 1DX and Nikon 4D or 4DS that is likely to be available. The price tag for both of them is huge ($6K to $8K) and not everybody will jump in to buy it. Give the Pentax ability to offer better high iso performance in its APSC models if Pentax can offer a FF camera with better high ISO and FPS around $3K it will be a very good low cost quality option. Currently if anybody want a FF camera for action or sports there isn't really a choice. Hence this will be a good slot jump in for Pentax. Alternatively as Richard balonglong said ideal is to offer two models one with 24 MP with high ISO and FPS for action and sports, and the other one with 36 MP for commercial and art work. The implied assumption is that Pentax will also offer required lenses for full frame. My 2 cents.

At current tech levels, 36mp seems the sweet spot. The K-3 and D800 [same sensor tech] flat out work for the photography I do.

If Pentax made a camera with 12MP that had low-ISO IQ equivalent or better than the current insane 24+ MP cameras, I'd buy that instead.
