This poll needs to be updated to add 12MP as an option for FF, now that Sony has decided to go back to the future with their 12MP A7s video camera mirrorless FF.

I read this too! - Advanced video capabilities (4K onto external devices) and ISO 100-102.400 expandable to ISO 50-409.600 - amazing! Wouldn't this be a really interesting step into Pentax FF? I don't think that there is much competition.

I'm sure FF sensors or even bigger will become cheaper with the time. This will make them more attraktive also for Pentax, Fuji etc. Big sensors mean also more and better information, this nobody seriously can deny. The print-technology develops further as well - it all will go hand in hand (more or less). Who thought 20 years ago about consumercameras with FF sensors and 24/36MP. Now comes 4K which will for sure change the game again specially among the hybrid cameras. Furthermore comes the Lytro (lightfield) cameras which again will change the game.
For the practical fotographer the questions remain all time the same: What do I realy need? How much technology can I handle? For how long the investment must last before a new one becomes due? Compatibility etc.

For APS-C, a resolution between twelve and sixteen megapixels seems just about right. Doubling the resolution and file size hasn't given me nearly the improvement in image quality that buying quality lenses has.

On the other hand, if you own a lot of quality lenses, going up to 24Mp is the only way to increase your resolution, probably by close to 20%. At least if you're not considering moving up to a larger format.

Yes, 16 MP or thereabouts seems to be optimal for a lot of things - file size, noise, fps. If any Pentax FF were targetted at sports or low-light, they would probably go with that. Otherwise, 24MP seems to be a decent general-purpose choice.

But nowadays FF megapickles get confusing, for look what we have to choose from in current FF's:

12 MP - Sony A7s
16 MP - Nikon Df, Nikon D4s
18 MP - Canon 1D C, Canon 1D X, Leica 220, Leica M9P
20 MP - Canon 6D
22 MP - Canon 5D3
24 MP - Nikon D610, Sony A7, Leica 240
36 MP - Nikon D800/E, Sony A7r

Lots of potential sensor choices for Pentax, I guess..

Well, the odd Canon sensor sizes are not available for Pentax. That pretty much leaves 12,16, 24 and 36. I have a feeling they'll go with 24. It could have similar characteristics (processor/processing time, fps) to the K-3.
As long as they get it out, whatever they do is fine. Sheeh.

I noticed a processing hit going from 12MP to 36MP, but I really doubt you'll see much difference in processing times between 24MP vs.36MP unless you're doing really huge batch operations.

I'd only accept a 24 Mp FF if it had better low light capacity than a D800. Something like the 16 Mp D4s, and if it had that 16 Mp would be fine, that's the sensor I think Pentax should put in it's FF. After all the weakness of APS-c is low light, high ISO noise and resolution. I'd like a camera that gives me something I don't already have, and addresses that weakness. For the most part, I'm happy with 16 Mp for landscape, and cropping from 24 Mp to around 16 Mp for wildlife and some macros.

I don't think Nikon would sell Pentax the 16MP D4s sensor.

Besides, the low-light capability of the D800 equals D600 which equals the D4s.. The reason to go to lower resolutions are storage size and processing time (both in and out of camera). Noise is the same.

Dynamic range of the D4s at high ISO is slightly better but that's a sensor design (that's not likely available to Pentax).

Pentax is likely 'stuck' (a good thing!) with the Sony sensors.

They all cooperate in certain fields together. Sony delivers sensors (made in China) to Pentax and others. Panasonic, Pentax work together developing a organic sensor, Sony produces the A 5300 for Nikon etc. It is about the same as in the Automobilindustry. Only Fujifilm produces it's own exclusuiv sensor but I bet they get some other components from the same places as Nikon, Sony, Canon etc.
