Yes, 16 MP or thereabouts seems to be optimal for a lot of things - file size, noise, fps. If any Pentax FF were targetted at sports or low-light, they would probably go with that. Otherwise, 24MP seems to be a decent general-purpose choice.
But nowadays FF megapickles get confusing, for look what we have to choose from in current FF's:
12 MP - Sony A7s
16 MP - Nikon Df, Nikon D4s
18 MP - Canon 1D C, Canon 1D X, Leica 220, Leica M9P
20 MP - Canon 6D
22 MP - Canon 5D3
24 MP - Nikon D610, Sony A7, Leica 240
36 MP - Nikon D800/E, Sony A7r
Lots of potential sensor choices for Pentax, I guess..
