Pentax FF with Sony 12MP sensor?

What if Pentax chose to go the opposite direction with the K-1 (or what ever they will call it)? Instead of going 24 or 36 MPs they chose to use the new 12MP sensor from Sony.

If they do, they'll probably not sell as many cameras as if using higher pixel count.
Pentax marketing will also have a difficult job, as APS-C cameras will have higher resolution than FF.

If it happens, it won't be their only FF model, and it won't be first.

OK, here we go....
Sony A7S Review: Preview

That looks fantastic... I'd trade MPs back down to 12 MP for better than D4s low light performance any day. The images from my K-x print up just fine. Put that in a K-01 body and I am sooooo laughing. Flying squirrels and other nocturnal critters, look out.

Check the price... I've seen $2500+ mentioned. Also no PDAF, so AF may not be impressive.

No chance. That sensor is about video and avoiding line skipping.
Well, the K-01 was originally supposed to be at least partly video MILC. All that manual glass. Yummy.

Sony isn't going to sell enough A7s to justify making the sensor. They will have to find a secondary market for it. The A7s is a very specialized camera with below average CDAF. 4K and high ISO are its strengths. Put that sensor in a DSLR with PDAF and you could crank out 10+FPS with ease. The high ISO and DR would make for an excellent wedding and event camera in a DSLR. It will smoke the Nikon D4s at half the price.

Pentax says they want to do something different. 12MP is fine for wedding/news/event work on a FF.

Pentax should assume that ff shooters know what they're doing and post process.

The only advantages to 12 mp are frame rate and storage size. The 'noise improvement' is spurious.

No thanks for me. Of course, I don't believe Pentax is silly enough to offer 12 mp so I'm not worried.

That would, indeed, be different and a 'bold challenge' to the existing market. Speeds with current processor technology would be great.

It would also be quite a risk...

Probably true. Sony can do it since they have a deeper camera line-up, which already includes 4 FF bodies in the 36 to 24 MP range. For Pentax to run with a 12MP FF as their launch FF camera may not be prudent.

The D700/D3 were 12mp and were wildly popular. I would easily take range and high ISO over more pixels. If Pentax made a FF DSLR at 12mp I would buy it. At 36mp, I would probably not. 12-16 is all I want

Not true, of course. There are myriad different photographic situations and workflows - and virtually all of them are valid (because we human beings aren't stupid, and we usually have good reasons for the method we choose). I could actually use a camera like this. Many of us could. Many Nikonians have, and still do. So all of us are stupid? Or are we actually getting the needed results with the appropriate amount of work?
