Your concept of 'rent' as the premium paid for early adoption is right on the mark. Especially when you're making images you couldn't otherwise have made.

Pentax prices for camera drop like bricks after one year, why invest before? In case I decide for a FF camera this year, I will move away from Pentax. The wait for new lenses as well as the wait for a FF camera or any camera news are extremely long. Currently a decent lens for APS-C/FF is needed, plus perspective for more interesting FF glass. Interesting means: large aperture, modern AF, weather sealed or just DA*. I could not get my budget of last year down on a 70-200, who cares about budgets as long as there is nothing available to spend it on.... at Pentax.
Yep, I can understand that. Although for me, since we have high resolution APCS (for instance the K-3) and a selection of APSC lenses that are rather good, I can wait for FF for two more years, because I don't believe that the Pentax FF would change much of what I do, because I don't need more than 24Mp , most of the time. However, medium format would be a significant step up from the K-3, but given how often I'd use MF, and that MF is less versatile than APSC or FF, it'd be much cheaper to renting a MF system once or twice a year for specific events, and we have a shop nearby that just rent 645D/645Z+lenses. For full frame, we'll see what Pentax releases (or not release, doesn't matter), there are now aggressively priced nice competitor FF ($2400 for a full frame dslr + 24-120 f4 kit), which is good. I can use up my APSC system, and also get a complementary FF system. There's actually no such thing as "switching" from one brand to another when you go from one system to another. If you have APSC and go FF, it's going to cost you the same load of money whether you by a new Pentax system or a new Canon system or a new Nikon system or a new Sony system. This situation of Pentax is such that going FF if the same as "switching" because until this year, all lenses available new were for APSC.

Other camera prices drop like rocks, too. A Sony A7R II is close to $3k. An A7R can now be had for as low as $1,100, new, and 3 figure prices if lightly used.

Cameras are about as good as long term "investments" as computers.
