I hope they continue in the tradition of offering us reasonably priced products with the same innovation & quality/value.
I imagine as in the past the cost will be reasonable for the innovation and quality offered.

Many, however, will not appreciate the price.

Maybe I'm the only one here but Pentax attracted me because of reasonable pricing. And of course kept me with innovation (SR, WR, etc) & quality/value (meaning as good if not better pic quality, solid camera bodies, etc).

I hope they continue in the tradition of offering us reasonably priced products with the same innovation & quality/value.

And, since they did it for the MF... why not for FF?
The 645Z is indeed reasonably priced, at $8500 However, its competitors are not. OTOH, on the small format market, pretty much everyone but Leica is reasonably priced.

Still, my hope is that Pentax stays true to its history and kicks the butt of the FF world... just like in the MF world. Walking softly & carrying a big stick!

They will do that for certain, exactly like they did with the two new D FA lenses

I hope you're joking... those lenses are listed for $2200 each right now. Thats the Canikon way.

But then again, we can use existing lenses & I'm very thankful for that. That is the Pentax way.

I'm not joking.
This is the Pentax way (at least regarding this first FF). And I'm fine with it, because the alternative is to never have products comparable to Canikon's best. I don't want a second-rate Pentax.

I think he meant that the lenses are big ("big stick")? But do keep in mind that there is no "Pentax" any more. It is Ricoh, not Pentax. And the "Pentax Way" went out a long time ago. The new "Pentax" will be a completely different animal. If you anticipate cheap cameras and lenses I think you will be sorely disappointed. I hope they keep lens compatibility, but IMHO even that will be on the table at some point if they go mirrorless.

I don't want a cheap also ran, I want a top notch camera and lenses. And that is not going to be cheap.

And the last time Pentax kicked anybody's butt was in the 1970's.

Maybe the MX or LX - but the last time Pentax kicked anybody's butt generally was in the 1960's, with SMC and the mirror and prism functions. By now we all know they kept the M42 mount an entire camera generation too long.

(I don't count the K1000 as a leading camera).

I was thinking end of Spotmatic era, 1970-1971. But yeah, 1960's is more accurate, had they been innovative with moving to bayonet mount and auto-focus when they should have things might be a lot different. But they did not, so we are where we are.

I meant they're pricey (but that's normal for this level of quality).

"The Pentax way" - whatever it means - might not be the short interval when Pentax futilely tried to grab some market share by selling cheap.

Let us fervently hope not. That would be the end. But the new DFA lenses, the da 16-85 and the new 18-50 seem to indicate a focus on quality even if that means a higher price tag.

I was specifically thinking of the SP-F, ES and ESII (I have one of each) released between 1972 and 1973 and not discontinued until 1976. Good grief, my KX was discontinued in 1977.

The K3 and K5 were priced on par with their Nikon competitors (D7000/D7100) when all were newly released. so if they are going after the D180, I expect the same comparison to hold true.

I don't think I ever visited a forum before where people wishes that the new gadget will be really expensive.
Personally I hope it's an improved K3 with a reasonable price tag, otherwise I will have to leave it alone. I can afford it, but slightly better photos are just not worth that much to me.

First, it's not a gadget but a photographic tool; and second, we're not wishing for it to be really expensive, but really good. But we know "really good" comes at a price, and we're willing to pay it.

For example, if 2000€ would get me a nice camera but with an APS-C AF and a dust generating shutter, but with 2500€ I could have a FF AF, performance and reliability improvements and generally higher quality components, I would rather pay those extra 500€. And Romanian wages are low.
