UWA predictions

I really hope for a pocketable 20mm f/4 WR with ultimate image quality (would not mind a f/5.6 or even f/8 since I use it only for landscape): flare resistance, colors from the DA 15mm limited but shaaaarp as a lens can be please!

I just hope Sigma release all its ART series prime in K-mount.
The 24mm f1.4 is a good wide prime.
Pentax own FA20mm f2.8 is pretty wide.

Canon have like 16-35, Nikon have 14-24, Pentax...most likely 16-35, but like others, price will be .... too high.

I've already got the Sigma 20mm f1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF and I recently bought the Sigma 24mm f2.8 Ultrawide II (yes, the rare autofocus version), which I think is a good start considering full frame UWA. I'm looking for the F or FA 17-28mm fisheye or a manual focus full fram fisheye. I could consider buying the FA20-35 or something similar. But there is of course the price of the full frame body itself to consider...so it would have to be sometime well after paying for the body before I would buy a new UWA lens...but if we for the moment forget money, I think a new UWA would have to be weather proofed. I see how despite several other good landscape alternatives on APS-C, as soon as the weather is bad, I end up with the DA*16-50 on the camera...and landscape in bad weather is so much more fun. Same thing applies to landscape near breaking waves or in windy and dusty places. So a weather proof reasonable UWA (zoom) is probably what Pentax should make.

It doesn't have to be big. The M20f4 was tiny. Why didn't I buy one of those 2-3 years ago when I had money and a bad case of LBA?

I use the SMC-M 20mm f4 on my A7 with excellent results. Manual focus is fine for 20mm - the classic UWA from film days. Now if Pentax would just put back the aperture sense for the M lenses on the FF...

Roadmap points to a large aperture uwa.
16-35 is rather popular nowadays.
Or perhaps 17-35 (Tokina?)

I prefer smaller than absolute optical prowess and big+heavy.
But seems like roadmap is set for f2.8.

However, options are already available now.
That cheap Samyang 14mm works well with the only con for distortion and bulging element.
Options like FA20, M20 work nicely and a pleasure to MF, just perhaps some IQ drop in corners and last 1/10 of frame.
I won't recommend the revered A15 f3.5 for now based on my impressions of trying it. (On A7, so who knows. ... Pentax may still make us happy)

Legacy UWA options working well or not will depend on the camera to some extent.
Sensor stack thickness, microlens array, in camera manipulation, pixel density, all can play a part.
So hopefully Pentax does more careful consideration on these.

The lines on the roadmap are from about 15mm to 30mm. Certainly not beyond 30mm.

If they are intended to be near-accurate, then this may be a D FA* 15-30mm f/2.8. Perhaps equivalent to the recent Tamron.

Remember that 16mm and wider on FF is usually fisheye. With modern production, the UWA world has really evolved. We can see the Samyang 14mm for FF, for example. Nikon makes some really wide rectilinear lenses as well, but they are not exactly very affordable.
Anyway, I am just hoping Pentax makes a good 24mm, and maybe a 20mm. Wider than that.. well, it would be impressive, but I doubt it would be in a quality/price range that I would want

For image quality, it is hard to beat the Samyang 14mm.

The K18/3.5 works great on film, but who knows on digital. Not sure if the built-in filters are of any use on digital, as you have a choice of four (Cloudy, Skylight, Y2 & O2) and you have to select one.

Don't see why it wouldn't do as stellar on full frame digital as it does on full frame film. One of my dream lenses yet to get hold of.

For a professional, 3 lens do-it-all quiver, it would make sense to have fast, high quality zooms in the 10-24 and 24-70 range to compliment their new 70-200 2.8. Talking with action sports photographers, there are very few sports shots that make it into magazines that are not taken with an uwa zoom, or the canon magic drainpipe. Lifestyle photos that build a story usually fall in the inbetween range.
