The new Pentax FF Sensor?

Sony just announced this:

"A7rII:
42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
BIONZ X Image Processor
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization
399 Phase-Detect AF Points & 5 fps Burst
Internal 4K XAVC S Video & S-Log2 Gamma
Weather-Resistant Magnesium Alloy Body
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC
ISO 102,400
no shutter blade motion
3,5x faster than the A7r
A7rII focus is almost 40% faster than the one of the A7r
Shipping in August"

Could this sensor be the one to go into the Pentax FF???!!!

Doubt it, since it'll take sales away from the 645Z.

I wouldn't be so sure.

I'm not certain Pentax would think that way. Remember -- the 645Z is more than just a 50mp sensor. It also has a range of high-quality lenses that give that sensor more room to do its job, a different (in my opinion, better) aspect ratio, and greater depth-of-field when you want it. And I'm not looking to start a flame war (this time), but to a certain extent because people expect to pay more for MF lenses, they WILL pay more for MF lenses, so Pentax can afford to make them "better" than their FF field-of-view equivalents, even discounting spreading that resolution out over greater surface area.

Pentax needs their new full frame to make a splash, and they need to keep up with the Joneses. I suspect the sensor that winds up in the FF camera will have a lot more to do with what Pentax knew they could purchase at the time they started development.

Not bad. However, the K-3II has pixel shift, and the A7rII does not have pixel shift.

Isn't the licensing with Sony such that Ricoh has to wait x number of months (on the order of 6-18) after Sony releases their products based on a new sensor? August would be too late to meet the "by the end of the year" target.

Seems this thread belongs in the Rumors section BTW.

Any kind of source, besides an old rumor dating back in 2003?

The A580, D7000 and K-5 were all announced within a month or so of each other, all featuring the same brand new Sony sensor.

Exactly, Sony wants/needs to sell their products. Maybe they price the latest greatest sensors for an equally latest greatest price, but they would be fools if they just plain didn't sell them at all.

No way in heaven or hell will Pentax use that sensor.

Why? Because of cost.... Pentax has always been using previous gen tech BUT polished it to perform better than similar competitor's products using it.

And I support that better..

You mean they never released the K-5, using the latest&greatest 16MP APS-C sensor? I was sure I bought one... just my imagination, then

I had read somewhere that the FF will have a 36 mpx sensor, so if it's a sony sensor, it might be the same one as the nikon d810...

Good enough for me. Just include a similar AF system too!

As I've said before, if Pentax simply made a re-badged D810 in K-mount as a 'Pentax K-1', not too many people would complain about it.

Yeah, a D810 + Pentax's pixel shift, flash sync and in body IS is a camera that a lot of people would get behind, I think. I'm personally a fan of them calling it the DLX though :P
