We know the format. Speculation might be fun (to some), but it's pointless.

Speculation is what people do -they notice an anomaly, comment, start a discussion, engage with other opinions, facts they were unaware of, learn from others, or realise that others don't know either and they must investigate further if they want to understand - it's what drives understanding and innovation. Wasteful - often: pointless - almost never.

You should leave out: facts, understanding, innovation The kind of speculation often seen here is made despite known facts, based of (sometimes intentional) misunderstanding, and the only thing it innovates is new way for Pentax to shoot themselves in the foot (fortunately, Pentax is not listening).

And I'm not just being mean: this very example, speculation about a new format, is ignoring the fact that the K-1 is a 35mm "full frame" format camera.

I do understand and respect your point - mine is simply that there is an interesting fact that the rear LCD is not, if the early mock-up is to believed, in a 3:2 ratio, whereas the other Pentax cameras I've measured have a rear LCD in the same ratio as the sensor. I think that's an interesting anomaly, which undoubtedly has an explanation of which i am unaware, and I was hoping that somebody might throw some interesting light on it. I know that all will be revealed in the fulness of time, but I just happen to think, as in scientific investigation, we learn a lot by trying to puzzle things out before time and comparing our conclusions with the facts as revealed - to me it is a fun mental exercise which can result in new insights along the way

I think older Pentax DSLRs had a 4:3 screen, despite using a 3:2 sensor.

My K-5 has a 6:4.5 cm screen that's 4:3. On the K-3 it's 3:2 I believe.

Hi!

I have news from a Ricoh representative:

It will be a 36Mpix sensor. We dont know the manufacturer.

Frame rate : 10 fps. [Edit: NOT confirmed!]

They wanted to release it in the summer, but had to be on par with Canon and Nikon. So they decided to upgrade it to not look like fools

Date: 22 February (I will ask again) in Belgim.

10 fps would be excellent for a 36Mpix FF !

10fps, with a larger mirror and more MP? The A7r and D810 can only do half of that, in full resolution mode. I'm a bit skeptical, but we'll see.

36Mp is a lot of data to fling around at 10fps, Prime IV would have to have higher clock speeds* and higher bandwidth buffer memory* than previous generations to accomplish this with decent buffer refresh rates.

I share Kunzite's skepticism.

*both of these have a profound effect on battery life. I wouldn't be surprised if pentax changed to a different battery from what they have used in previous cameras.

10fps in crop mode might be doable (a small increase from the K-3's 8). If the mirror can move that fast, and of course if the sensor can support such transfer rates.

No offense to Azergoth, I believe what he said: that some "Ricoh representative" said those things to him. I only doubt the content, and will continue to do so until it can be double checked somehow

P.S. I'd rather have a somewhat slower continuous shooting speed but a K-5/K-3-like quiet mirror, than a 10+FPS machine gun. Maybe Pentax/Ricoh can do a miracle with some smart mirror damping mechanism... maybe they have some other tricks up their sleeve; but I'm not holding my breath.

10 fps seems high to me as well and generally unnecessary. Most sports shooters aren't going to be shooting with a 36 megapixel sensor camera. Maybe a newer version of the sensor in the D810, now with BSI?

The Nikon D4 can fire at 10FPS, but has a sensor that is half the resolution of the 36mp sensor proposed for the K-1 so PRIME IV will need to have nearly four times the I/O capability of PRIME III. Also the D4 has the Multi-CAM3500FX AF module, the most advanced AF module to date from pentax is the SAFOX XI AF module which I seriously doubt could ever challenge the Nikon AF system*.

Having the ability to shoot at full resolution at 10FPS is of no use if only two frames are in focus.

*though digging through pentax patents reveals there is a possibility of improvement over current low light focusing capability and giving AF coverage over a wider field....now I have rice stuck in my teeth.

Absolutely. Everything is [and needs to be] connected: AF system ability, metering accuracy, mirror dampening mechanism, lens motor speed, CPU speed, buffer RAM depth and bandwidth, SD card write speed, body stabilization system efficiency etc - if you want great image results when you push uber high fps on a conventional DSLR, especially at big MP.

Even the latest-and-greatest A7RII can only push 5 fps in a limited way while doing AF-C, and that lacks a mirror too.

So if Pentax can achieve 10 fps at full 36MP resolution with decent AF results in the K-1, it will certainly be a very impressive engineering feat.
