K-1 likely in full production run now...

On occasion, I visit the Pentax forum over on DPReview.

Many of the visitors to that forum hang on every word that "asahi man" says. It is said that he has an inside connection at Pentax.

A couple of days ago he said -

" K-1 and 70-200 are in full production run,the target is end of January for the 2.8 70-200.

Than we should get the first shipping.

The K-1 is the Big Pentax Showevent at the Yokohama CP+.

First shipping target could be end of march.

Thatīs how the Meeting ends today."

This is certainly just a rumor, but given the source I would not be surprised if his statements are correct. Time will tell of course.

I purchased a K3II camera yesterday from B&H. I asked my contact if he's heard anything on the Pentax full frame. He said he's heard nothing. So, I'm afraid you can not pre-order yet from B&H.

April 1 is the start of some nations' financial years, but I hope Ricoh realise just how bad it will look if they nominate it as the K1 release date.

I'm inclined to believe that the lens is in full run. The camera? Preproduction samples to get them out to reviewers. If they're announcing in February & selling in March, full production will probably be around January.

Quite reasonable possibility, actually. Could be in full production already, depending on all kinds of factors, including unexpectedly high initial orders for the camera (remember 645z and how Pentax had to reshuffle production plans to meet demand?).

I read on some thread here (maybe asahi man) the camera is more a project one-off like the 645 than it is the start of a series of FF cameras (that is of course purely rumor) EDIT: Wrong. ogl wrote that on another Forum; asahi man said "K-1 means FF and next bodies might be K-1z, K-1a, etc. /EDIT so they could well be making a large first batch in a small number of actual production lines. That way if there is an initial surge of orders but little refilling demand, they just stop making them. If demand drops to a certain constant level but continues after the initial order cycle then they match production speed to order speed and carry on..

They sold thousands of K-3s in pre-order. It's quite possible they already have a production line going.

It's been so long in coming, and generated so much buzz over the years, Ricoh shouldn't need to hire any rocket scientists to help them assess demand for the K-1. Fire up the factory now Ricoh, run triple shifts.

I have little doubt that the new Pentax FF production line is already under way or close to readiness to ramp up production. Exciting times ahead for those who are waiting to get their hands on the new FF models. For me, I am interested in learning about the general user experiences before I jump in with both feet.

Unless they have little demand for producing other k-mount camera's due to large enough stock.
