One wish for the new FF

I love the crop modes on my D800 and find them quite useful.

My hope is that not only does Pentax adopt the D800's various crop modes but does them one better: provide for a crop-sensor-specific square format of approximately 20x20mm which would completely cover the entire area covered by crop-sensor-specific lenses (e.g. DA 16-45mm). Assuming a 36Mp sensor, this would translate into 4092x4092 pixels.

That is actually a very interesting idea. How they implement that in the viewfinder is the question.

Indeed , that would make more sense than just APSC sized crops. BTW, I like the square format and 4x5 type of radio, unfortunately on APSC it wastes a lot of the sensor area and pixels.

How about... having a few pre-defined crops and the ability to define your own crops?

on the Nikon D800 one option they offer is to "grey out" the cropped area. I'd be down with that.

If they *MAINTAINED" the crop sensor diagonal of 28mm, then a 4x5 "crop" when using a crop-sensor lens would be taller than a mere 2:3 crop.
Basically they could maximize the number of pixels covered by any crop-sensor lens for any cropped proportion when used on full-frame bodies.
This would be a great benefit for those trying to maximize the value of their current set of crop-sensor lenses.

And it should be noted that a few DA lenses will cover most of 24x36mm sensor area anyway, so a full-on 24x24 square using such DA lenses would be just dandy.

There is APS-C crop mode, but I doubt there will be square crop.

"I asked if she knew who manufactured the sensor, and she either didn’t know or didn’t want to say. I thanked her and thought I’d try again tomorrow. I went to look at the 70-200mm and 150-450mm lenses that are full-frame ready, and she returned to tell me the one thing she could: that the new full-frame sensor will also have an APS-C crop mode."

Is there any reason apparent from any picture why the cradle to which the rear LCD is hinged shouldn't rotate around the point where the struts are anchored? That would be neat

actually, I'll answer my own question - the power/data transfer cable would stop it - would be neat, though

Would be pretty nice, agreed. One potential big mistake with all this that keeps nagging at me - if Pentax does *not* offer any crop mode beyond just aps-c. They have some significant lenses that would be perfect at 1.2x crop.

You can always crop in post, but the decreased card space and increased FPS as well as just the convenience makes it a really nice option. And square would be cool with an overlay, either greyed out beyond the square frame or just a wire frame. Composition would be fun and feel a bit different.

How does a crop lens look on a FF body? Does the viewfinder have a little curtain that closes down a bit to conceal the vignetting and show the true FoV?
