But I keep reading posts where people seem to expect the price of a FF Pentax to be below the current price of the 2 year old Nikon D810. I have to say that I believe that they are dreaming.
Pentax can't match Nikon/Canon prices.
I own a K3 because Pentax gives me features (image stabilization and weather proof mainly) that would cost me a lot more money if I went Nikon or Canon.
I hope the same will be true for the Pentax FF, otherwise - since I own only one FF Pentax lens - I will have no reason to go FF with Pentax.

There is a lot of denial going on here.

$7000 for a Pentax 645Z

$1,000 for a Pentax K3ii

$4,000 for a Pentax Full Frame. Price dead center in the middle.
I don't see how the 645Z pricing plays much into this. Pentax needs to compete with D810/A7RII/Mark D III crowd and pricing it closer to the K3, not in the dead center of a medium format body and APS-C body. They need to entice Pentax APS-C users to upgrade. Pentax has been pretty crafty in the past about keeping the costs low on their bodies by reusing components from other models(like the 645Z and 645D sharing parts with other cameras) so I could see this delay as a way for Pentax to offer something very solid at a decent price. I would think $2500-$3000 to start could be a reality.

Over $3000 USD, no questions asked. They are going after the same market as a 5DMKIII and a D810. Why does anyone think that they can build a comparable, competitive spec wise camera to the big boys...which are both due for their yearly update...and be priced like their "entry" offerings in the D610, 6D. It doesn't make any logical sense. Pentax is not going to be using the K-1 as a loss leader. They are going to be using the K-1 as a flagship to show that they can be a player in the professional market and show everyone that they are not here to just lie down and take it.

With the info that @Kenspo has given us I'm 100% certain that we will have a camera that competes on the same level as the $3000 cameras from the main competitors. So it will be priced in the same market. If Pentax turn around and release a camera that competes with the current gen of pro Canikons for less, then the Canikons market will go "so what's missing... where did they cut corners" because they are used to paying a price for the cameras they use already. If it is priced similarity then it comes about raw specs, handling, image quality, and after-sales support both from Pentax and third parties.

$2900-$3400 USD for sure. if it's under than I will be shocked.

How is Pentax able to sell the 645Z at half the price of another medium format body with the same cutting edge sensor?

Really? Which features are lacking? Weather sealing perhaps, or frame rate, or image stabilization support?

645Z is a box with electronics from K-3 and a sensor. Shared R&D makes it cheaper.

Please tell us in detail the features Pentax omitted from the 645Z that allowed them to shave off 7+ grand.

Right, which was the point I was trying to get Wired to understand. If Pentax could figure out how to get a medium format body to share R&D with the APS-C lineup it's certainly isn't out of the question they could do the same with the K1.

I'd rather say shared R&D, shared components (i.e. ordered in larger quantities = cheaper), shared company facilities, shared distribution network and so on.

Or perhaps they'll do a higher end camera, and share the newly introduced technology with subsequent APS-C models.

Let's not forget that Canon and Nikon themselves are happily sharing technology between formats, at much higher volumes. This will be normal for Pentax, but not a competitive advantage like for the medium format.

It's more likely new technology isn't rolling up from K-3 to K-1 but down from K-1 to the next round of APSc cameras. K-1 is now the flagship platform, the core technology camera. Unit volume comes when the new tech rolls DOWN to APSc flagship, then mid-range.* In about two years there might be another 645 - maybe with a larger (Sony) sensor. We might expect some FF tech to roll up If that happens.

K-3ll was a test platform for Pixel Shift.

Boy, some people certainly seem to get sensitive when someone talks about their 645Z cameras.

Face it, the 645Z is a terrific camera but it is the leader in that market segment. As such Pentax has been able to set the expectation.

That is not true at all in the full frame market. There is already a lot of competition and a lot of expectations. Whether you like it or not full frame cameras are primarily categorized by price. Higher price, higher expectation. If you expect to be taken seriously in this market then you better play with the big boy and price your goods in the vicinity. And the specs better be impeccable if you want to draw people away from their Nikons and Canons.

Of course you can always go off and try to build your own market segment like Sigma with their Foveon cameras.
