DA*300 plus HD 1.4 x TC coverage of FF in the K1?

Like many others I’m keen to see how some of my currentlyowned lenses perform on the K1. In particular I’d like to know how much of FFmy DA*300 matched with the HD 1.4 TC will fare.
As a test, I used my MZ-S 35mm film camera, got the film commerciallydeveloped then scanned it with my Nikon V ED negative scanner. Note - the poor qualityof the shot below is due to filming in a gale with Wellington’s (New Zealand)harbour being whipped up a treat.
The first image is of the selected frame scan originally shot at f11 toallow the lens setup to gain its best coverage (downsized file for web use)
The stats: (JPEG copy opened in Photoshop), 59MB size, 48cmwide/31cm high at 300ppi.

The second frame is a crop of the previous frame to remove most of the vignette (file downsized for web)
The stats: 39MB, 37cm wide/26cm high
Crop frame as MB% of original frame: 66%
The question I have for the techos is – How closely wouldthe K1 36MP and its APS-C crop of 15-16 MP relate to the MB change from my 59MBfile cropped to 39MB (66% of the full MZS-S frame)?
If the relationship is close, then would I end up with a23MB file (66% of 36MB), by shooting full frame in a K1 then manually cropping itas I’ve done here?
The APS-C crop mode in the K1 delivers a file in the 15-16MBrange, and I’d be inclined to use FF mode if I were mounting the DA*300 plusthe HD 1.4 x TC, to get a file size similar to what I currently get using myK3.

Just put it on a crop camera without the teleconverter. More reach (1.5x vs 1.4x). Faster. No vignette.

I have said it a couple of times before; DA 300 works fine on K-1, both with and without the converter.

I have tested 31, 55, 77, 100, 200 and 300 on K-1..all works fine! In FF mode!

Thanks for the reply but I already use the 300 plus TC on my K3. Using it on a K1 and getting a file size similar to on the K3 would be an added bonus for me.

The point though was about using the 300 plus the HD1.4 TC.
The TC is not a full frame lens and that is why it showed the vignette on my film camera

If you want 300mm f/4 full frame equivalent, by all means put the DA*300 on the K-1. That is exactly what I plan to do.

If you want 420-450mm f/5.6 FFE, it makes more sense to me to use the DA*300 on the K-3 and get an extra stop of shutter speed.

If you want 630mm f/8 FFE, put the teleconverter on the K-3 and use the DA*300.

Maybe I'm missing something so feel free to educate me.

Your results conflict with what I've seen/read from other usually reliable sources which indicate very little vignetting. Did you remember to take the lens hood off while shooting? I suspect what were seeing is vignetting caused by the hood.

I used the hood on. I always do..on all lenses. Hardly any vignetting with the K-1. 1.4 converter works fine too.

Thanks for the reply. I currently use the 300 plus TC for wildlife photography. It gives a convenient 420mm (perhaps 430mm because the 1.4 TC magnifies more than 1.4).If buying the K1 I would like to use the combo kit there as well and if I was getting 23MB files after manually cropping the vignette then that would be an added convenience for investing in the K1.

Yes I kept the hood on. With the 300 mounted on its own - no TC included there is no vignette at all. The TC which is not a full frame lens makes the difference.

Is this sinking in, or does it need to be written on a bat we can hit people with?

I don't plan to use the K-1 for telephoto work as it seems an APSC camera such as K-3 would let me fill more of the sensor with the target and provide maximum number of pixels for post processing work.
Is there something wrong with my thought process here?

No. Unless you want an excuse to buy an FA*600

Same here. Having been hooked on something like the K1 sensor via the Sony A7R, I definitely want a K1, but I see no reason to replace my K3 bodies for most of my birding. One exception are large Sandhill cranes which have almost no fear of humans. For cranes fairly close, the Pentax A400 at F/8 to F/11 is gorgeous at 36mp, and the lower noise of the FF sensor lets me go about a stop faster on the ISO if I need to up the shutter speed on take off or landing.

For most other birds, I have found FF wastes more weight and pixels than it is worth. Of course in my current FF configuration, I am giving up AF, too. That will happen somewhat less with the K1, but the DA*300 with or without converter will be hard to duplicate on FF.

Where did i say that? I tested on K-1, did he? Please, go play in the traffic!!
It just can't be that bad on MZ-S and be OK on K-1 at the same time.
