Image File Size

Does anymore know or been clever enough to work out what the DNG file size for an image on the K1 will be at FF?

As I've just ordered up a couple of SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro 95MB/Sec SDHC Cards ready for K1 delivery.

36MP with 14 bits means a maximum of around 60MB per DNG but a typical file will be smaller with lossless compression.

My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica. 1.44mb floppy disks. I think you got 12 to 15 shots per disk.

I have 32gb Extreme Pro cards in the k-3 so I think that is what I'm going to go with on the K-1 as well. I have really tried hard to cut back on the number of shots I take and with the K-1 I think I will be even more deliberate.

Thanks for that, I was guessing it to be around that... so I should still get 300 ish per card, provided I've done the maths right, happy days.

Most of mine in the ISO 100-800 range are around 45 Mb

Raw files from my FF 36mp Sony A7r run around 35mb regardless of ISO. Perhaps the ARW format compresses more.

Here's some extra info I've since obtained from the pdf of the K1 operating manual, Appendix Page 119...

Approximate Image Storage Capacity by Size (When using an 8 GB memory card) Raw 101.

I processed an A7r file to TIFF last week. 209 megabytes!

I forgot about that. The latest firmware for the newer models allows the option of uncompressed raw. I don't see that the firmware update for the A7R lists that as a change.

Hmm, my K-3II reports 598 RAWs on a 32gb card. So 400 RAWs on that card with the k-1? Not too bad, I can live with that.

Yeah, after this thread I upgraded to firmware 3.1 from 1.01, but no option for uncompressed raw. The notes do say "improved image quality" as a claimed benefit from the upgrade. I don't know what that means.

From what I have read, it is mostly highlight noise that gets dropped in the lossy raw files, but there may be some minute posterization effects at the borders in the shadows. Since we have no other option, we will not be able to see the difference.
