Pentax K-1 in B&H

I went to B&H today if they have K-1 but they had it but it was a pre production model. It was a first time handling K-1 in my life. I really impress about AF speed and accuracy. The viewfinder was quite dark perhaps it had 28-105mm f3.5-5.6.

What I don't like about this camera are

1. No joy stick
2. Purpose of having 3rd dial
3. B&H staff(...)

Well he said that Pentax K-1 has similar performance with Canon 6D and Nikon D610. WTH?

3. He probably has sales incentives from Canon and Nikon.

The K-1 is positioned so that it can't be directly compared to any model. It borrow a bit of each cheap and expensive ff camera models.

To select the particular focus point you want to use.

My call? Put it on centre focus, centre-point spot meter, tie AF lock to AE lock, and shoot the way your forebears used to do when they made immortal pictures with K-1000's and MX's.

Thanks. Never had a camera with a joy stick. Can't the K-1 do that with the 4-way pad?

Other brands have both joy stick and 4 way pad or other types of pad I think such as Canon have a wheel instead of 4 way pad. Well, it's much comfortable to control some setting and because of the location of joy stick on 5d mark 3, it's way better than not to have.

We already have 'other brands' - Pentax is the alternative.

I don't know what he's talking about. My K-1 just showed up, and so did the joystick. I already bested my 1984 high score on Asteroids (it plays on the rear LCD, for those who didn't know).

LOL. But shouldn't Pentax, ever quirky, be the Intellivision of the camera world instead of the Atari?

I was able to stop by B&H as well today and was surprised to see they had the K-1 on display.

The K-1 is a well thought out camera. It is not that much bigger than the K-3 model. Any one who preferred the size of the K10/20 will not be disappointed in the K-1. It was easy to compare the K-1 to the K-3II as they are both on display together. Holding each normally by the grip you can tell the K-3 is smaller rather than the K-1 feeling larger. For me the K-1 fit my hand slightly better than the K-3.

I can not imagine people making much of a complaint about the K-1 viewfinder. The viewfinder is clearly larger than the K-3. The camera had so many settings going on it was hard to quickly try to get the K-1 back to normal. As the AF point was set to the extreme left so when you half pressed the shutter it would focus on some distant object instead of what I wanted in focus.

Even with this short awkward look at the K-1 I am already sold.

I have to give Pentax some kudos for going outside the box with the rear LCD. It is a simple design executed well in bringing very functional use to the rear LCD.

The Canon - Joy stick is a pain to use. And I hate that round 4-way button. It sickens me when I am shooting with my partner who is in the canon eco-system. That thing just sucks I can tell you. I could never get used to it.

And you bought into this word of mouth instead of buying the camera... LOL. You know there is a superb Canon T6i that is way superior than all other full frames out there that you should buy. LOL.

I cannot see that the addition of a "joystick" is significantly superior to using the 4-way controller. Too many mechanical controls/buttons and you begin to lose track of which does what and where it is located, especially if you've assigned different functions in a series of "user" settings.

Looks like the fellow in the second picture has all his money stuffed into the back of his pants.

I can see how some people would like the joystick. Some people loved the little red joystick in the keyboard of the IBM ThinkPads. I couldn't ever work that little red knob, but I didn't have the notebook long. I suppose I could get used to the joystick.

Moving your thumb will be lesser if Pentax have a joy stick. Also, it's much convenient and comfortable for setting and controlling. So why not?
