'Small' flash for K1

I have order my K1 for my Europe trip in end Jun and as it didn't have the internal flash, I like to get a "small' one (less weight and room in my bag) with me just in case I need to have some extra lighting. Search around and find some legacy Pentax flash seems good for me, will this legacy flash (like AF220T or AF280T, both have tilt head) work on the K1 ?
If not, any other recommendation, thank a lot.

Here are a few points:
  • The AF220T is incompatible with the K-1 and cannot be used with that camera
  • The AF280T does not support P-TTL flash automation and has limited function on the K-1. It does support auto-flash (using on-flash sensor) as well as manual on the K-1 and also offers fairly extensive flash dedication. I own the AF280T and find it very useful as an alternative for my Sigma P-TTL unit. My review and others in the PF flash review of the AF280T: PENTAX AF 280T reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database
If you need a compact P-TTL option, there are multiple basic P-TTL flashes of lower power and smaller size from several makers. Models with tilt/swivel start at about $100 USD. The AF200FG and AF201FG are the Pentax low-end offering with basic on-camera P-TTL support.

The link below is for Pentax-compatible flashes available at B&H and should give you an idea of price.

Supported features for a particular unit are harder to determine. The reviews on here on Pentax Forums are helpful, but at present there is no comprehensive and up-to-date comparative feature matrix. The field accessories section of this site is a good source of information and to pose questions:

This is a neat little unit which will replace an on-board flash very well, and not expensive.

I'm not sure we can yet be confident about Metz flashes working in P-TTL on the K-1.

The AF201FG is tiny, and should work well, although mine is currently untested on the K-1; my AF540FGZII has shouldered those duties so far.

Hello All,

Thanks for all your information. Search a little more and I just order a AF200FG in B&H, this should be good enough for me.
I wonder if I'll really use it in my trip or not, but just in case....

Thyristor flash autoregulation is not to be underestimated.

What is it about the 220T which makes it absolutely incompatible? I have a 200Sa that might do similar duties one day and I would hate to think I couldn't use it.

My Metz 64 AF -1 works without any problems in both P-TTL and P-TTL HSS

Cheers

The 220T is 1980s TTL only (not P-TTL). Since there are no 'auto' or manual modes on the flash, and the K-1 doesn't support TTL, there is no usable mode for the 220T on the K-1. The 200S has two 'auto' modes plus manual, so it will work the same way it does on other current bodies.

I think the concern is due to the forward compatibility issues common with 3rd-party flash. Metz has a history of problems, but Sigma has had some too.

My Metz 52 AF-1 works on K-1. There's a second version of the mecablitz 26 now.

A little talk about it you can find here.

We could write a petition for Meike K-320 PTTL support. 😀 - Seems to be a really nice little device for low budget.

I bought the 200 a couple of weeks ago because the K-1 doesn't have a pop-up flash.

It works fine for what I use it for - fill light for extra contrast in the subject, not key.

This. I've a Vivitar 283 and 285 ... never felt want to upgrade. Cheap as chips these days.

I'd recommend the AF200T - they're cheap. They'll work great. They run around 20 bucks on the used market. I might even part with mine - I never use it anymore.

I only get the Metz Mecablitz 24 AF-1 (probably the smallest p-ttl flash available) to work well on the K-1 in crop mode. In FF mode, all shots are massively overexposed.

Your observation may be worthy of its own thread. If there are quirks to the Metz P-TTL on the K-1, it is best they come to light in a prominent way.
