K-1 and Nikkor lenses

Hi,

Stupid question, but...
First of all I am Pentax user since day one, but I need something faster for wildlife. Is it possible to use Nikon lenses with K-1? With some kind off adapter? I need fast telephoto lens, but Pentax doesn't have one. I have used rented 150-450mm, but the image quality is not that good. Off course it might be user error or bad copy, and the F5.6 is way too blind.

Thanks in advance.

Not possible.

Leitax in Spain does make a mount for Nikon F to Pentax K. However, you will loose auto focus with the mount.

Yes, it is possible, manual focus. I saw photos taken with a K1 , a Nikon 400 f3.5 + K mount TC, becomes a 560 f5.6. The Nikon 400 f3.5 A-IS ED lens can be purchased for less than 1K on ebay.

BTW, if you can't get sharp images with the DFA150450, humm that's highly likely that you won't with a Nikkor lens. One hint why is that is because you seldom use a 450mm lens at f5.6 because the DoF is so thin (a few inches) that any slight error or focus ruin the sharpness of the image (relative to sensor resolution) because the maximum sharpness is only present at the focus plane and so, sharpness drops on front and at the back of focus plane.

Nikon shooter of 600 f4, stop it down to f8 otherwise too many shots aren't exactly sharps because of the DoF and focus accuracy.

Which Nikon lens? As others have said, no autofocus, stopped down metering, possible mount change or precarious semi mounted status (some f mount Nikon lenses Can mount on pentax directly, non-ai for example, they mount without locking. It is a kludge. )

The adaptist mount is also an option. But bye bye warranty. Still manual only.

Thanks a lot for comment. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that this is user error, but ohter thing is the max F stop (5.6) it is littlebit to much. This morning I was in bird hide and I had to use ISO 6400 to get 1/500s and it was way to much for wildlife with K-1. I'm considering to buy extra kit for wildlife ( Nikkor 300 F2.8 and D3s.) But yeah, will see.

I think I will rent this 150-450mm for longer time before I will deside. Ideally I would use Pentax lens. But the Nikon is so good in wild life.

Yes. Actually quite easily so for a selection of older lenses.

We have a Pentaxian who first adapter both
  • Nikkor 500mm F4 and
  • Nikkor 300mm F2.8
to Pentax in DIY way and later reconverted that using the cheap Leitax für Pentax mounts.

Here are those lenses in company: http://h2097500.stratoserver.net/forumimages/2016/309/309_2016062920_bild6195a1200.jpg

And here is an image using the 500/4:

http://h2097500.stratoserver.net/forumimages/2016/309/309_2016062924_eichhorncrop1200.jpg

Here is the Leitaxed Nikkor AiS IF-ED 300 2,8:
http://h2097500.stratoserver.net/forumimages/2016/309/309_2016070227_montiertam300er.jpg

As far as I understand, he often uses the Pentax x1,7 AF Adapter to regain autofocus and get more reach.

Well if you are so easy with shelling out 6.000+ EUR for a single lens combo, then why even consider other options.

I wouldn't buy new camera and lens. It would cost max 3000€.

Unless shooting birds in flight, sunny 16 rule says that f8 is enough to keep ISO lower than 1000. Then in absence of sun, f5.6 isn't fast enough, but I don't know any good image in poor light. One thing that's true though is for birds in flight when fast shutter speed is needed to avoid blur. There is also shooting from a blind with semi-reflexive glass that roughly takes one stop of light, so in this case f2.8 and f4 are preferred, but the shooting distance being shorter, 300mm f2.8 / 300 f4 does it.

What about the Sigma 500/4.5?

Have you considered this lens?

Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO Lens for Pentax K 184109 B&H Photo

It's not cheap, but it is K mount, faster than the 150-450 and B&H have a used copy that's much cheaper than the new price here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/used/380707/Sigma_184109_500mm_f_4_5_EX_DG.html

..or tha DA 560/5.6. Having a faster lens is always better, but the high ISO performance of the K1 (but also of the K3) is absolutely enough to get excellent results with a 5.6 lens. Also the 150-450 is reported as a very sharp lens, are you sure that the bad performance you experienced depends on the lens quality? And, before thinking to adapt a K1 to Nikon lens with the result to have a MF telephoto, I would explore other options, like getting a Pentax lens, like the FA 600/4 (if you find one). But the modern 5.6 lens should be largely to be preferred, in my opinion. Or, the last choice: get Nikon fast lens and a Nikon body. Good luck!

Hi

I guaranty you, concerning the 150-450, the grass is not any greener in Nikon land. Absolutely and categorically no way. If you can't produce sharp well exposed images from the K-1 and the 150-450 combination (especially with the outstanding Pentax SR) you will not do any better with an equivalent Nikon lens and certainly not with a lens which needs an awkward converter to make it work with a Pentax. Me thinks.

Cheers

P.S.
Bad light where this shot was taken.

Probably I will end up with 150-450mm lens. I am Pentax fan.
The reason why I asked the question is that we have wildlife hide. To get good shot there you have to go in dark before animals and birds will be active (there is also bear tracks , but haven´t seen one yet. And if the weather is overcast then it means that I have to wait about 2-3 hours after sunrise before I can use lower iso. For animals the iso 6400 with K-1 and F5.6 it is fine, you do not see (much) it on edited image, but with birds this is different story.
So I got the answer that I was looking for. Thanks for comments.
