Should we expect more D FA* zooms?

I'm really liking my D FA* 70-200, so much so that I'm finding excuses to shoot subjects in that focal length, and I'm skeptical that the D FA 24-70 or the 15-30 (+ a whole new filter system, ouch) have the same optical quality. Do you think Ricoh might add D FA* zooms, or will they consider this range covered?

I wouldn't expect any other D FA* zooms anytime soon. With the basics already covered and 4 primes plus a fisheye roadmapped for next year or later, it looks like Pentax will be pretty busy in the near future. But I'm sure at least one of those primes will be a star lens!

Despite the roadmap, I would not be surprised to see additional zooms, especially additional models overlapping "normal" FL. Consider what they've offered for APS-C that overlap the nominal "normal" FL of about 35mm: 16~50mm; 16~85mm; 17~70mm; 18~55mm; 18~135mm; 18~250mm; 18~270mm; 20~40mm.

Only one of them is a "*" lens. So there may be some new lenses, but don't expect a "*".

I hope in the middle term, if Pentax achieve more user base, we could see some f4* zooms.

For myself, some extra-wide, very compact primes (FF versions of the DA15), and maybe some medium-tele primes (a new 135~150mm f2.8, or maybe f2??).

I don't think it's been roadmapped but I can imagine something like a 24-105 or 24-120 a somewhat likely release at some point. It would be anyone's guess whether Pentax would give either a star '*' moniker. If they have constant f/4 it would seem a little more likely, if they did variable aperture 24-120/3.5-5.6 instead, that would probably not get the star.

when was the last time Pentax released a new lens (not just an existing lens with new coatings and rounded aperture blades) that wasn't on the roadmap?

5 months ago? IIRC, the DA 55-300 RE PLM wasn't on the roadmap.

The other maybe was the HD 20-40mm/f2.8-4 Ltd. Before that.

Ooo! Suppose they could manage to convert the 18~135 to FF? Now there would be an attractive walk-about for urban-site touring.

The 20-40 was on the roadmap: Pentax Lens Roadmap for 2012-2013 - Pentax Announcements | PentaxForums.com

Yeah, the 55-300 (and the 18-55 re as well) added more than a coating and/or different blades, but they're existing focal lengths - an updated version of a lens, not a new lens.

From a concept-development-production point of view, it was very much a brand new lens
It even marks the introduction of 2 new technologies to Pentax K: the electronic aperture and the PLM motor (the retractable design and the focus-by-wire were previously used by the 18-50 RE).

But IMO the deciding factor might be that they made the roadmap when the K-1's success was uncertain. Hopefully, they soon decided to push the development for more lenses...

I'm sure if they did, those lenses will show up on the roadmap before they show up on the shelf.
