You would think it is but sometimes theoretical and practical experiences are not the same.

I am sure there is a reason why this lens is paired with such a large hood and I fully understand this. Pentax would not go to the trouble of producing it if it wasn't. They need to cover all eventualities.

However with all the shooting I have done with this lens I have come to realise it would take more then severe oblique light to hit the front element to cause trouble because it is still too far recessed with this hood. Trust me I have not yet come across this. The angle at which I can shoot directly into the sun with this hood is reduced of course but I have to tell you that I hardly ever do this with this lens. So I opted for the convenience with this setup and I haven't looked back.

A couple of sample shots:
Low setting sun this evening, sun just to the left outside viewfinder (could not go any further to the left, it would have blinded me. Absolutely no PP, only reduced to upload.

I've finally managed to process some photos from my newly acquired 150-450. Below are unprocessed photos outputted from RAW DNGto JPG. The only "processing" I did with the photos was crop/magnify them because of the K-1 full frame. I apologize for the quality of my photos. I am not a good photographer but love taking photos.

Camera: Pentax k-1
Lens: 150-450mm
