Macro Recommendations for the K1

Hi All.

A couple of years back I sold my film era 100mm f2.8 FA macro as I fell in love with the 100 DA W f2.8. The 100 DA W has been through a lot after several years of travel and now has a broken lip and is a bit grindy (if that is the best word) . So I am contemplating repair or replacement. I have a K1 coming in about a month so I'm figuring my options for a full frame K1.

1) Repair the 100 DA W f2.8. Will this lens be cropped on a K1? How expnsive would the repair be?

2) Replace the 100 DA W f2.8. Same cropped issue as above

3) Replace with a film era 100 FA or F f2.8.

4) Replace with Non Pentax options? Tamron 90, or Sigma 105?

I want to maintain 1:1 focus. Frankly I like the waterproof function and if I can get full frame with the 100 DA W, option 1 or 2 above would be my first choice.

I have several other macros including a 200 A f4, 50mm f2.8 F, 100mm f4 A, and my wife's old Tamron 90mm f2.5 adaptall.

Thank you for your recommendations.

Doug

Is this the lens you mean?

If so this lens is designed for FF and works very well on the K-1.

You can get it repaired at Precision for around $260 (flat price they say on website) Precision Camera - Digital Camera Repair, Video Camera Repair
KEH shows a flat price of $150 Repair | KEH Camera

Up to you to repair or buy another one.

If you mean this one:

SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR Reviews - D FA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

it is the D*FA* WR 100 Macro, not the DA 100. The "FA" part indicates it is a full-frame lens, so the answer is that photos on that lens will not be cropped.

If you mean the D FA 100mm WR then the lens will cover the full K-1 sensor as it is a FF lens. That is what the "D FA" designation means. How expensive to repair? I doubt anyone here would be able to answer that. Ask your repair shop for a quote. If under warranty that would be Precision in the USA. If not under warranty then other shops can be used, try KEH at least for a quote.

As to other lenses, the D FA is probably the one I would go with especially if WR is important. That lens is also very well built and you seem to work your gear hard so is an excellent choice. I think I would get a repair quote and compare that with the cost of a new one.

As the others say its probably worth fixing the 100 and it will work nicely with the K-1.

BTW (although you probably are not going to need it) the FA100 f2.8 macro, if you can find one second hand, works great with the K-1 and the advantage of having a focus limiter.

If your meaning this lens... SMC Pentax-A* 200mm F4 Macro ED, it's one on the finest macro lenses Pentax ever made.

Will maintain 1:1, it is FF and IMHO without equal.

Tokina AT-X 90mm f 2.5 macro.

I love my Tokina AT-X 90mm but you have to have the extender designed for use with this lens in order to reach 1:1.

Use KEH for the repair

I highly recommend getting the lens repaired by KEH. I have used both KEH and Precision and have KEH to be faster and cheaper and their repairs to be of very high quality.

Which one?

72B is a 1:1 macro and is rated very highly(its f2.8) so your wife owns...55B/55BB which are virtually the same are 1:2 so you need the 01F 2x TC to get 1:1.....

Probably your least desired option....The M50 F4 is small and convenient and Cheeeep.Only about 1:2 though.

Part of my K1 kit is the FA100 f3.5 macro, its light and does the job.

In order of random selection . . .

  1. Vivitar Series 1 P/KA 105/2.5 (native 1:1)
    Self-contained - sharpest 1:1
  2. Vivitar (Tokina) Series 1 P/K 90/2.5 / 1:1 Adapter
    Bokeh
  3. Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 90/2.5 52BB / 1:1 Extension
Easiest to manual focus on K-1
  4. FA50/2.8 Macro
    Sharpest center area

Each has a redeeming quality; none is perfect for all situations.

Hi Folks.

I guessed I never realized it was fullframe. Interesting.

And thanks for the tips on KEH. Love those guys. For $150 I will do so.

Cheers and happy New Year.

I don't have the Pentax D FA WR 100, but I do have the Tamron 90 SP F2.8 - it's not weather sealed but it is magical and easier to obtain at a good price new or used...

Pentax A 200 f4 is fantastic lens. DA 100 f2,8 WR will cover FF also.

IF you love it, and you sold your old lens to have it
THEN you should repair it

There are several old school options out there that I personally like. for me, the F and FA 100 2.8 macros are wonderful. However, it seems you had this lens at one point and sold it in preference for the new DFA WR 100 macro.

I say, Repair the lens you love and keep going.
