Ultra-wide prime for full frame

I'm on the market for an ultra-wid prime to use with my K-1. Do y'all have any suggestions? I'm consider the Pentax FA* 24mm f/2

This is wider than what you've identified as a focal length but if ultra wide is your thing then I'd suggest you follow this thread ULTRA wide lenses (only FF equiv 12mm or lower) - PentaxForums.com the discussions revolves around the 11/12/14mm lenses available for FF.

If I were to go to that wide, then I'd probably couple it with the Pentax 31mm as a "normal" lens. What annoys me though is that the wider you get, the weirder/non-normal the filter requirements get. Like that Laowa has a special adapter... Already have a Cokin Z-Pro and some ND filters that I'd want to use and don't want to invest in yet another adapter. But then there's the D FA 15-30mm which has its own filte-related issues. -__-

The FA* 24 is a super-wide angle but it is excellent. A cheaper alternative (if you can find it the MF version is a bit more common) is this one:Sigma 24mm F2.8 AF Super Wide II Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

For ultra-wide you need to go below 24mm Like the FA 20mm F2.8

I am very happy with Samyang 14mm f2.8 on my K-1. At f11 it is extremely sharp. Strangely, there is no aperture control via the body, even if the lens is set to A...

Sounds like a broken lens to me!

Another great option is the Samyang 24mm F1.4. It's probably sharper than the FA* 24mm, though I haven't faced them off head-to-head.

Lots of options these days!
Pentax FA 24mm, FA 20mm
Samyang 14mm, 24mm
Laowa 12mm, Laowa 15mm macro
Irix 11mm (two versions, but optically identical)

Samyang 14mm is probably the most affordable. Very sharp lens, great for astrophoto. Should have auto aperture (mine certainly does, works on both my Kmount cameras). But it has some downsides, like no filter threads, can't remove hood, the distance scales are miscalibrated (though you can adjust them easily). The main problem this lens had was QC, so quite a few of them came out decentered and had to be replaced. Despite all that I still recommend the lens due to sheer optical quality. Just get it with warranty, or from someone who you trust. Don't have personal experience with the others. The Samyang served me well, especially considering its price

You forgot the Samyang 20mm 1.8 and
the Irix 15mm 2.4
and all the fish eyes
and legacy glass.

BTW the Laowa 12mm with the filter adapter allows screw in Polarizers as well as standard 100mm rectangular ones.

FYI my Samyang 14 aperture works correctly on the K-1 and other bodies.

f4-5,6 is the best.

I've considered the Samyang, but what about filters. I have 100mm filters that I'd like to be able to use, but I also don't want to spend money on another holder.

I have the Rokinon 14/2.8 which is the same as the Samyang. Great value! Tricky for filters but I hear there is a holder kit that works, I forget which ones but someone here probably knows. I just shoot mine bare.

I have the Rokinon/Samyang 14 f2.8 and it works fine on my K-1. I had to adjust the infinity point, so definitely test your lens if you buy one. I get clear star shots at f3.5; at f2.8 bright starts have "blooming." I have an old manual focus 24mm f2.8 and it has decent IQ on the K-1, but not as good as my DFA 28-105.

Ultra wide is often considered to be wider than 24mm nowadays.

If its stopped down landscape work, I'd recommend the following :
1. K28/3.5
2. Samyang 14/2.8
3. Irix 15/2.8
4. FA31ltd

The Samyang 14 is a steal if you can do with the distortion (which can be heavily reduced with a lens correction profile).
For the price you can get it, you can easily spend a bit on a filter system for it.
Its basically the IQ on par with most of the UWA out there that are 3x or more its price (win some lose some on other factors)

There are others of course like the Laowa 12mm, Samyang 20 and 24mm, but I have not used these to safely say that they are good.
