Thoughts on K1 upgrade

Given the reviews that Precision camera has are many considering the upgrade? I was until I saw that it was through Precision.

I am seriously considering it, if not already committed. The last thing I heard about Precision was pretty positive---I think it was someone's very recent experience, posted on these forums.

Precision has been picking it up lately, and with a clear-cut service like this there shouldn't be any nightmares.

I would not worry about Precision doing this. I can not imagine Pentax would allow your K-1 to be damaged during this upgrade process, and part of why I say that is if you dig in to some of the posts about experiences with Precision, some of the folks who had issues and then contacted Pentax were provided with new replacement equipment. It would do too much damage to the brand to have this flop. I think you can feel "safe" sending it in. I plan on doing so.

OK, I've just read some horror stories about the place. I also need the battery door replaced as I broke it.

Personally, I would like to see some positive indications/actions from both Pentax and Precision on this topic. Pentax could use this to illustrate their warranty service capability. I would like to hear about a plan for all of this.
  • I would like to hear that Pentax has pre-positioned sufficient mkII circuit cards to support Precision.
  • I would also like to hear that Precision is potentially looking at say a 1 week turn around time. Receipt to return of the body.
  • It would also be very encouraging to be able to contact Precision say via email to reserve a slot, and then confirm that slot with a USPS/FedEx/UPS tracking number. Having a very "lumpy" effort, especially with possibly running out of circuit cards from time to time would just potentially have this good will gesture, melt down. No one needs a melt down.
  • In this way, both Pentax and Precision could manage the incoming camera bodies along with the supply of circuit cards. If the demand is large, then it can be managed with time, notification and planning. Also, folks with cameras can plan for vacations, and around job commitments (there are a number of Pentax professional photographers out there in the wild).
  • I'm hoping for a success here, but not wanting to have success ripped from the jaws of victory and turn into an unmitigated failure. That would be good for no one.
Pentax can harvest a ton of goodwill from this, if it all turns out great.

... As mkII images start appearing with side by side comparisons with the mk0 images, there should be some excellent results (fingers crossed). The more positive comparisons and reviews, the larger the demand. It should be a simple swap out - with the real only potential bottleneck being the supply of parts.

You make good points, and one hopes both Pentax and Precision have discussed these. But I'll wager that the first 2 bullet points will not be true. I have an extra camera, in fact my "first string" camera, so even shooting as a pro I can afford to loose my K1 for a few weeks. I hope it won't be months. As far as having enough boards...Pentax has been surprised twice, now, in succession, by success: the 645Z and the K1. Both sold better than they anticipated. I think that's one reason the Z's price has come down so far----Pentax didn't anticipate its success, and then overcompensated and manufactured too many, and then both Hassy and Fuji hit the market with affordable DMF cameras in rapid succession. DMF is still a small market, and could get flooded with product pretty easily.

If this latter is true, then I say Pentax ought to be looking at a solution for the Z like the one for the K1, and pull all those bodies and rework them for sale as ZII's, and give those of us who got Z's a similar upgrade option to this K1 deal.

And if I'm wrong, then I hope it means there's actually a new DMF camera coming. We're in the 4th year since the Z came out...

I doubt you will hear much of anything based on previous history from both Ricoh and Precision. But I agree 100%, they garnered a tremendous amount of buzz and goodwill over the upgrade program. But if the implementation flops that goodwill will evaporate. They have a wonderful opportunity here, lets hope they don't drop the ball.

Based on my history with Precision I will wait a bit before upgrading. I want to hear some real positive success stories before sending them my K-1.

I wonder if they'll maybe give a free sensor clean while on the operating table.

I have nothing but praise for the repairs done by CRK in Australia, so I have no concerns on that front.

I contacted Sun Camera in Canada just after the news release, they asked if I was talking about
a firmware upgrade. They knew nothing of the hardware upgrade ,
today they emailed me saying they will have more information in April .

I’m quite confident Pentax has a production plan to supply the upgrade boards and a process design to install them. The issue in the US and Canada will be whether Ricoh Imaging NA is up to the task of coordinating the plan with Japan and supervising Precision implementing the upgrade process.
