I would expect the Samyang to have better image quality, but this comes at the cost of no AF and more bulk.

Depends on what you mean "best" (which different for each person).
The FA 35 f2 is pretty sharp and has the advantages of being small, light, and having AF. Mine is in my camera bag all the time.

I don't have the Samyang 35mm but its reported to be very sharp, is faster than the FA35 and probably better bokeh too (although FA35 pretty good on the K-1). On the other hand it is a lot bigger and heavier than FA35.

I have had the 35mm f2 and it's a pretty sharp lens on the K-1 with pretty good bokeh. I've not used the 35mm Samyang but I'm pretty sure it will be sharper but the trade off is size and weight. If you are mainly using manual focusing and doing landscape type work have a look at the SMC Takumar 35mm f3.5. I have a minty copy and in my opinion it is just as sharp as the FA35mm and you can pick them up at a fraction of the price. Might be worth a try out.

thx chris .I bought some cheap lenses off ebay 135mm 3.5 m and the 24mm 3.5 k and when I tried them on the k1 at first the image was to dark and even doing the manual exposure it wasn't working it drove me crazy .I then changed the shutter speed but the images to we just were not sharp and this was on a tripod liveview .my 50mm macro and 100mm are superb just completely different .I even tried the 24mm with pixel shift and the detail just wasn't there even stopped down every appeture all soft so its put me off getting the older lenses ..never had any problems when I had a sony mirroless

Recently I compared to FA 35 F2L against Tamron 28-75mm. I already have Tamron 28-75mm and wanted to know how it compares against FA35mm @35mm. They performed almost same so I ended up returning FA 35mm. My usage scenario is f8.0. Advantage of FA35 is wide aperture and it is really small.

For landscape, the max aperture is probably not that important with either option, unless you're trying to capture all available light for night shots. Speaking only of myself, I bet that I would have a hard time telling the difference between either of these lenses stopped down the f5.6 or smaller [larger numerically]. So, at that point, I would be shopping for an FA35 and a hood for it.

There may have been a reason they were cheap...

I have the M135, and while it doesn’t knock my socks off, it’s sharp enough. And I have heard good things about the 24mm...

Did you check for haze, fungus, and the like?

If your main interest is landscapes, the added speed of the Samyang is probably not terribly important. Stopped down I suspect you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in image quality.

Size and weight, as well as having common filter threads for all three lenses would be more important to me. The FA35, DFA50 and DFA100 would be a nicely matched set.

yes a difference in price..i found this and if you look at them and compare at say f5.6 the Samyang is superior in everyway the pentax 35mm is awful unless the person got a really bad copy ..I just downloaded the images and put them at 100 percent next to each other its put me off the pentax ..take a look

I have that 35/1.4 samy and can confirm it smacks any 35mm Zeiss to the head at f/5.6 or so for maximum IQ. It also confirms that quality DSLR design also comes with weight (dis)advantage.

But, be prepared to buy about 5 copies to find one properly centered. That is the price of Samyang unfortunately.
