The FA*85/1.4 is one of the best.
Good bokeh in most situations (all lenses will have poorer bokeh in some situations, but the FA*85 has less of those imo).

I swear it is easier to say what I don't use. I may not have used my DA 12-24... not sure. 8mm Samyang - yup. DA 15 - yup. DA 20-40 - yes. DA 40 - yes. FA 31 - yes. DA 16-50 - yes. DA 50-135 - YES!!!!. DA 18-135 - YES! DA 12-24 - ? Not that I recall. DA 60-250 - Sure. DA 70 - Yes. DFA 100 - Yes. DA 200 - Yes. FA 300 - ? Not sure. M /A/F 50 (various) - Sure. FA 35 - Yup. Sigma 400 AF - Yes. The key is under what conditions - that will narrow the list.

I would consider what your usual/typical working distance is. Do you tend to work in cramped quarters and smaller rooms? Tend to have lots of space to work with? Do you shoot in environments where you need to tightly frame your subject or do you have attractive surroundings you may want to include in frame...

In tight quarters, the 31/1.8 can produce really nice results.
The FA77 is hard to beat within your budget at moderate distances.
Speaking of 135 - I have an A135/1.8, but frequently don't have enough working space to properly frame subjects. I would only get that fixed focal length if you know you will frequently have enough space to use it.
If you don't mind carrying a larger lens, the 60-250 (you'll want a modded copy for full frame) has very attractive bokeh for a zoom and is just above the high end of your budget.

If you don’t mind manual focus and economy is a strong consideration (and you haven’t done the obvious and bought a used FA77 Limited yet), the ‘K’ fast medium telephotos are good choices - K85/1.8* (especially), K105/2.8 and K120/2.8. All three are sleepers, though have fewer than ideal number of aperture blades for creamy smooth OOF backgrounds.

* SMC Pentax 1:1.8 85mm is (reportedly) the same lens optically as the Cult Classic SMC Takumar 85/1.8, with heritage from the Auto Tak 85/1.8. The K lens has a bayonet mount.

That depends on preferred subject distance and desired framing. I've used both on my k-3 with and without flash. Of the two the 100 seems more versatile, but the 200 will give more subject isolation.

FA 43/1.9 Ltd: Gem of a lens with character. A normal lens is not too short for portraiture, if you know how to use perspective to your advantage.

HD FA 50/1.4: Ultimate optical quality; very nice bokeh. Again, not too short if you know what you are doing and images will look more personal.

FA 77/1.8 Ltd: Gem of a lens. Not as good optically wide open as the new 50/1.4 but still a great portrait lens.

Samyang 85/1.4: Fantastic bokeh for a bargain price. Only downside: Manual focus.

I have a K1 and with the birth of a new family member I've really been doing a lot of 'portraiture'...mostly of the candid variety and also without flash. Available light generally indoors, are the elements I work with.

I've been using mostly prime lenses...my DFA 50 normal F 1.4, DFA, 50 Macro F 2.8, 70 Limited F 2.4 and 40 Limited F 2.8. The 40 and 70 are ASP-C lenses, but I use them anyways...my K1 on full frame...not cropped...and they are great...mostly I'm using F 2.4, F 2; 8 to about F 3.2...no complaints...I focus on the eye and click away.

My two 50's are full frame lenses...both normal 1.4 and macro 2.8 and they are sharp. The normal lens...usually F 2 to F 2.8...the Macro 50...F 2.8 to F 3.2. These are sharp lenses.

Now I'm considering getting a Pentax DFA 100 Marco F 2.8/ Versatile...ie; macro and sharp according to an old Popular Photography review of this lens when it first came out. I was thinking of a 77 Ltd...F 1.8 or maybe trying a third party 85mm F 1.4. The third party...Samyang I think is manual focus ...but.... my old eyes are what they used to be...they prefer auto focus.

I see a distinction between "portraiture" and "candid poses". Portraiture, to me, requires a much greater attention to composition detail, a sharper image, and carefully crafted depth of field. Candid shots on the other hand, are less formal, relatively unposed, and vary more in terms of distance from the subject to the focal plane. For portraits, I don't see any way around the 50mm f/1.4 full frame lens that's recently been released ("HD FA 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW"), though if the pocketbook won't allow it, my substitute would be the "55mm f/1.4 DA* SDM" telephoto APS-C lens (about $600), or even the "SMC DA 50mm f/1.8" (around $120). The cheaper lenses will work on the K-1, but with vignetting at wider aperture settings. For candids, I'd go with the "HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8ED SDM WR"; the cheaper APS-C alternative would probably be the "DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR" (less than two hundred bucks). If it were me, I'd go with the cheapest option, the 50mm f/1.8 APS-C job, and save my pennies for the best available all-around FF lens (like the 24-70 f/2.8). That way, you'll have something inexpensive that will work (albeit not as nicely as possible) while you're working on getting something really good.

There is also the FA 50mm 1.4/1.7. Plenty of second hand copies around and is a lovely FF lens
