If the DFA*85 is better than the FA*85 then it will be one of the best lenses ever. Even with the new DFA*85 in play, the FA*85 will still be a very acceptable lens.
And maybe drop in price just a little bit. And maybe the older Sigma 85 too. At least that's what I'm kinda hoping.

Maybe ...... it will depend on the price of the new benchmark - expect $1500+

That would be comparatively cheap. Convert €1500 to dollar and you may have a possible price, then double that and convert to Euro for the price here. It could beasily be $2000 or $2500 though.

Still, i cannot judge the coming DFA* 85 but whatever the DFA* will be, the FA* will still be an amazing lens. It was specifically optimised for portrait though and for general use the A* 85 was even better.

However I fear that if it grows as much as the FA 50/1.4 grew to become the DFA*50/1.4 the DFA* 85 will weigh 3kg. That is too much for me.

This guy would do the same with the cheapest 85mm lens on the market and that is Samyang 85mm. He obviously knows how to take photos and has beautiful models. In other words, upgrade your skills not necessarily your gear.
While that's true, he and I talked a bit about the switch from the fa 77 to the fa* 85. He said it was a really good change, while he liked the 77, it took more post processing to get what he wanted the shots to look like than the 85. Equipment can be a factor in efficiency.

Chris is the master of this lens (even though he now shoots a *cough* $ony).
I hadn't talked to him lately didn't know this. I see a few shots in December with the Sony and a bunch in 2019 with Fuji.

Yes, Fuji too.
For what it's worth, I like the images he makes with the Fuji, but not the Sony. At his level gear *does* matter.
His work with the FA*85, and the FA Limiteds before that, was outstanding.

The few shots I saw weren't enough for me to tell, but the Fuji shots did seem pretty good.

As an owner of FA* 85 I really like this lens. Can't compare to FA77.

I think $1500 would be the max. As good as the new 50 is for $1K I just think they'd have a hard time charging more than 1500.

There was a Sigma 85mm f1.4 EX DG as well which seemed quite good. Not as good as the FA*85 but nothing to sneeze at.

I've got that Sigma, and it's very good. It's more modern than the FA*85 and I suspect is better.

But the new DFA* 85 should be outstanding, given the performance of the first model of this series, the DFA* 'Fat Fifty'.

I should have Trade Marked that term. I think I was the first to coin it - at least in this Forum

Thanks to the fine work of C. Rankin I will finally get the long desired *85. I showed his photos to my wife and told her they were taken with that lens. She was not impressed until I told her all his models are from local nursing homes and none under 60 years old. She said get that lens right away.

I'm crying and not showing this to my wife. I have shown her his stuff, but as is the truth I was first attracted to his work by his fantastic landscapes and non glamour shots. I've shown her his sword coast treasures Flickr album.
