🤦*♂️ I don’t know why I forgot about the m40mm. That’s on my analogue “to get” list.

While not as small as the 40 pancakes, the 43 is still a tiny lens. It is smaller than the 50s. Mine lives on the K-1.

I got a K-1 for Christmas after pining over one for years. Of the 20-ish shots I’ve taken I’m quite impressed. However some things I can do on the K-3 I can’t seem to find on the K-1. For example I’d like to specify where the AF focuses like on my k3, but I’m unsure of where it is/what it’s labeled as.

This camera is so overwhelming (in a good way) that if you’ve got any tips/tricks I’m all ears.
If I may, I’ll suggest a simple plan for lenses for your camera. I would get the three FA Limited lenses: FA 31, FA 43, and FA 77. Make sure they are calibrated to your camera, and you have a nice kit.

I have been thinking of going that route. 77 first, 31mm and last the 43. However, I’m saving for the DFA 15-30mm 2.8. The guy I got the camera from (yeah it’s a used camera, but the price was right) had that with it, and the lens left a mark on me. Thanks for the suggestion though. Great minds think alike.

I have the D-FA lenses too, but just don’t care for the weight.

There's lots of fun to be had with the classic M 40mm, but I was never really happy with it (on film.) Mine showed a lack of contrast, and was hard to focus with that little focus ring (and a slower open aperture of f/2.8).

But I love the 40ish field of view, so I splurged on a used FA 43mm when one came up.

I simply love it -- it's a good deal sharper than the 40mm, it has lovely microcontrast that makes black & white images sparkle, and being autofocus (with a brighter maximum aperture) makes focusing easy to do and easy to see where the focal point is. I recommend the FA 43mm wholeheartedly.

Congrats on the K-1. I'm looking forward to eventually getting one.

The 31mm and 77mm get better.

I do not need to hear that.

I hope to stick with my current lenses for 2020. I had so much GAS the last year that I need to just use the stuff I have.

Ok, so I tried to put my M 50/1.4 on my camera, and for some reason it went insane. It wouldn’t recognize there even was an aperture, the screen kept blinking, it wouldn’t let me input focal length, green button didn’t matter, shutter priority didn’t matter. What’s most alarming is the shutter release wouldn’t even fire. What am I doing wrong?

First check: is the Custom Option #Whatever (it's on the last page IIRC) that says "Allow Aperture Ring" set to 2 (the non-default option that says "Yes")? If not, the camera thinks you *don't* have a lens on.

That did the trick. Thanks. I never had to do that on my K3 though.

Depends a bit on what you shoot.... if all my 3 were stolen the 43 is the first I'd replace....then 31 and probally not the 77... I don't shoot people that much.... and when going towards 70 mm I find 70-200 more useful. But, then I'd feel incomplete in some way, buy a 77 again.... and not use it just like the one I have now.

I like the 31.... but it can be a bit big at times.

What do you mean by this? Also, the not shooting people thing is why I haven't jumped at the 77mm or even the FA*85mm. I've heard the 31 and 77 compared to offerings by Leica. Is this true?

Just that it is a physical step up in size over a 43... the K1 is a biggish camera and the 43 doesn't really add to it's size but the 31 seems to... obviously I'm talking degrees of size.... so... a K1 in a small domke bag... ie.. 5xb.... a 31 is the weight and size of a M20 and FA43.... or a 20 and 43 on a 2way cap takes as much room up in your pocket as a 31 on it's own. I own a 31... and like it... but if room is an issue normally go 20 and 43.

Certainly the FA limiteds are unique.... and are rewarding to own and use.... and a bit Leica'ish in this regard.

I'd probally only listen to someone like "Digitalis" regarding any technical comments.... he has experience with both.... and is way beyond having a hobiest infactuation with either.
