Just made the switch and need some assistance.

I got a K-1 for Christmas after pining over one for years. Of the 20-ish shots I’ve taken I’m quite impressed. However some things I can do on the K-3 I can’t seem to find on the K-1. For example I’d like to specify where the AF focuses like on my k3, but I’m unsure of where it is/what it’s labeled as.

This camera is so overwhelming (in a good way) that if you’ve got any tips/tricks I’m all ears.

Hah, that's slightly trickier on the K-1. Press "AF Mode" next to the lens mount, then you can use the e-dial to go from Spot to Select to Auto-9 (or Auto-33). The small button above the 4-way dial (the one painted with the little HUD) works to select the point (or point group, if you are in Area-9)

Congratulations on getting your K-1! You might consider downloading Yvon Bourque's comprehensive Pentax K-1 / K-1 II guidebook here for a donation of $18.99USD:

I got the one for my K-5, and it makes a great companion to the user manual. Lots of tips/tricks.

This is covered in pp 51-3 for viewfinder shooting and 53-4 for live view shooting in the operating manual. It's a bit complicated to describe clearly and briefly. Especially note the table on p 52 on selecting the AF point, listing the 7 options available.

Enjoy that K1 now you've got it... it's a great piece of kit.

Looks like this has been well answered already but hopefully you should find the AF to be a little bit better than the K-3 even.

Enjoy - its a great camera!

A tip, use the fine focus adjustment to calibrate focus accuracy for your lenses.

My Tamron 90/2.5 has been surgical since I applied that -3 correction. It makes a world of difference.

I’m getting the sense that y’all love this beast just as much as I do. Since getting it, I’ve shot with lenses I thought were “good, but not great”. Most notably my FA 50/1.4. Dont get me wrong, it’s a nice lens on Crop, but the FF makes it something “more”.

Question: how comparable is the FA43 to the HD-DA40? While I’m keeping my crop kit, I don’t like losing the ultra-compact pancake lens for FF.

When switching between k3 and k1, I still have difficulty with the preview button. In all cameras I have/had, it was always in the left-top part above the screen. On the k1, it is on the right hand side.

You could try the inexpensive "Retro Lady" SMC Pentax-M 40mm F2.8

FWIW, my experience with both the DA 40mm LTD and the DA 40mm XS on the K-1 have been very positive, if you own one already, give it a try, you might agree.

You will get used to the change which I think is a big improvement from earlier PENTAX DSLRs.

I certainly was impressed by the improvements moving from a K5 to the K1. The bulk of it also required some getting used to...

Yes, the size seems to be the necessary price we pay for all that K-1 operational excellence.
