DA* 16-50 lens on Pentax K1 camera

Hi. If you use a DA* 16-50 lens (APSC) on a K1 camera, do you get the whole image or vignetting? If so is the problem across all focus lengths (mm etc)? Thanks.

16-50 DA* on K1

Krazny: Thanks. I spent ages searching but didn't find this. It won't work at any scale! Regards GW

I’ve found it works better with the hood off... but it still vignettes like mad at most focal lengths...

I’ve also noticed that outside of the APS-C image circle it gets worse fast.

But it’s more usable for square format shots.

I’ve found you can TECHNICALLY use it On the K-1, but like everyone has said you get crazy vignetting. The only time I’ve used my DA* 16-50 Ion my K-1, I’ve switched it to crop mode

Thanks everyone. If you switch to crop mode on the K1 you only have access to 15 megapixels - 10 less than my K3-II camera. Having checked other sites it seems that the same problem will occur with all my current lenses - 10-17mm fisheye, 15mm limited, 16-50 DA*, HD 55-300 telephoto etc. The only real solution is to buy some FA lenses! With the camera costing £1700 (£900 secondhand) and an HD FA 24-70mm lens costing £1033, that might not be soon! Thanks again.

The primes are less restrictive. Da 35 (not macro), 40, 50, 55, 70, 200 & 300 all give good coverage (not perfect) on FF.

If you were to use the 16-50 in FF mode and then crop the picture to remove the vignetting, say to an aps-c sized picture you will also only be getting 15MP. They are both two sides of the same coin.

The answer is to use FF lenses. I agree they are not cheap. You do of course have access to many Pentax legacy lenses, some manual focus and exposure but F and FA lenses are fully automatic. I like the FA 50mm 1.4 lens on the K1. You can pick these up new still or best bet is grab a second hand one for a couple of hundred pounds.. Great IQ and very fast.

Thanks Pschlute. I've decided not to bother trying with my old lenses and save up for a K1 and an FA 24-70 lens, almost the same range as my APS-C 18-50 DA* lens. On current prices I need around £900 for the 2nd-hand camera and about £500 for a 2nd-hand lens. Watch this space in about 6 months time. Regards and thanks to all.

Using all my old film lenses on the K1 at the FOV they were made for is half the fun of owning a K1

Vivitar 80-210 series 1 has always been my favorite lens for my Pentax MX. And finally i can use it again with my K1 with a viewfinder that reminds me at my MX.
