1000mm and 1200mm lenses

Does anyone have any experience with either Pentax 1000mm or 1200mm on a k1 MarkII? I know they are no longer made and I will be getting used. Any thoughts would be great

No experience with either but i would suggest that sample variation is going to be your biggest concern. You will be shelling gout a large sum of money for either lens so you want to be able to test it first if possible.

There is a 1000mm mirror lens made for the 6x7 that can be adapted to the K1. These are not common though.

There are a lot of test shots with APS-C cameras on the Pentax-A* 1200mm user review page. The K-3ii in particular should give it a thorough workout. It seems to pass with flying colours. I would expect it to be as good on FF, but I guess that's what you're looking to confirm. Good luck finding one!

I don't think the K-1000mm is in the same class.

I agree. The 1200 looks like a great lens. Chunk of change though

@gofour3 and @monochrome own the 1000/8, I believe.

If @Clinton decides to break his vow of silence, he might have a thing or two to say...

Also, @Ducatigaz is a wizard with uber-long lenses, and he owns the A* 1200.

Practically speaking you might read the reviews of the 150-450 Pentax D-FA, the latest DA 560mm, and the latest 3rd Party Sigma Legacy Zoom 150-500mm lenses. Read about how these were to handle, and their rendering results when used on various supports in the field. You can also look at the long A series, F series, and FA series discontinued Pentax optics. Reviews say what was/is doable with those optics as well. I am replying with this notion in mind: how will you use such a long lens? Those just named, if using a crop factor APS-C camera require special handling and compensation for lighting, subject or mounted camera movement, and subject conditions to get usable sharp, lit, and detailed results. And, they are lengthy physical units when used on a tripod or monopod, or with other support systems. They require maximum daylight, reasonable ISO selections for acceptable results, and bracketing a quantity of shots and/or exposures to get reasonably sharp results.

Most unsharpness is caused by camera shake, hence using Shake Reduction or antishake is essential for most shots using those lenses, with the support system used in a non locked down mode, with some drag on the support unit easily adjustable field conditions response head. Multiply their unstable results support needs to limit blur (quantity of shots taken of a subject set up) by +- 2X to see that the long lens you want may be not what you are looking for. Application??? Anticipation??? Expectation??? The named lenses with post rendering cropping, or a 1.4X good teleconverter may be better for handling and field uses than what you are suggesting, may give better results because of needing less rock solid lockdown, or a less lengthy SR compensation. If you are considering the cheaper 3rd party off brands for your named focal length, expect fringing, not all colors coming into focus on the sensor focal plane, and greater handling requirements. Using them for moving subjects to get a decent result is almost impossible.

Whatever has become of Clinton? I always enjoyed his knowledge of telephoto lenses.

@gofour3 did this Review of the K1000/8 HERE but shot on film with a K Series camera.

@SteveM owns a Mint copy of the A*1200 in addition to @Ducatigaz. Goubpjp hasn’t been around since 11/2018. I think his collection of extreme tele photos was auctioned.

I haven’t mastered the lens yet. I need much better support to do it justice - probably 3-point support - but at least a Wimberley gimbal head.

Here are all members who added the K1000/8 to the database. SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5 Serial Numbers - Pentax Serial Number Database - PentaxForums.com

As mentioned above I have the K1000/8, but have only used it on film. No clue how the old heavyweight will fare on the new K1MII.

Regardless the most important thing with either the 1000mm or 1200mm is good tripod support. Skip that and neither will produce good shots on either mediums.

Phil.

If a shorter focal length may be enough, please also have a look at the Novoflex 600 mm / 8.0 (CAs) or it's Leica Version with the 560 mm / 6.8 Telyt. Compared to the 1000 mm they are a steal and quite easy to get your hands on. Focusing with the pistolgrip is not for everyone and the latest version is heavy like a tank, do not think of shooting without a tripod and it has not automatic aperture. IQ is quite decent.

I do have the 150-450 and use it often. I enjoy the lens and get great shots. I was toying with getting an extreme lens. There are some things it would be great to have the extra distance. I shoot the 150-450 both on a tripod and freehand.

I appreciate everyone’s input and at the end of the day how much would I use that extra length

The A*1200mm F8 ED [IF] is a very sharp lens if you can nail the manual focus. I have only used it on a K-3ii/K-5 and as was previously mentioned it needs a very stable tripod to reduce any movement.
