Since I broke the Goon I've been driving the Ram. Over the past few years the front brake calipers have been hanging, but would always return to normal operation.

Well the other day the right one hung but didn't let go.

Things got ugly real quick.

So, instead of continuing on the cylinder head refurb on the Goon, I spent yesterday replacing the calipers and rotors.

The left side still had another 10,000 miles left .

The rotors are original, and showed very little wear.

We had a front rotor split in two setting off one day (a Sunday) making all sorts of ominous noises. We turned round and slowly drove the 200yds back home and made other plans for the day. Both front rotors were replaced the following day: I wasn't taking any chances on the other one doing the same!

These days my rotors are replaced because the whole brake assembly comes as one piece unit. Need new brake pads? You get new rotors as well.

The rotors and calipers on the Ram were original, twenty years old with just over 140,000 miles on them. I slipped in new pads at about 80,000 miles. The rotors wore down about 1/8" in the first 50,000 miles or so, then gave up little after that, and stayed true with negligible runout right up until the right caliper hung.

My plan was to change out everything at 150,000 miles.

It just happened sooner.

I should be able to get to 200,000 miles before needing to drop in a fresh set of pads.

The rear brakes are drums, and show very little wear. It may be well over 200,000 miles before they require anything more than bleeding fresh fluid through them.

BTW, the StL baseball Cardinals just won their 15 game in a row, breaking their old record of 14.
Make that 16 in a row and a sweep of the Chicago Cubs in Chicago.
Playoff bound, I hope!

Wow, the weeks fly by don't they?! Well my brother headed home last Friday after a great month and half visit. And the missus and I tested out the new trailer on Saturday night. There may even have been a view.

How did you hold up during the rain? Or were you out or it?

Your caliper transformed itself into a nice milling machine for the disk. ;-)

The real rain was Thursday. My buddies, my brother and I were out all day on ATVs and SxSs and we all got soaked to varying degrees. Friday was much better as the rain held off for the most part. Saturday was quite nice until the even when a storm blew through but by then we were in the trailer prepping supper.

It's been crazy, crazy weather this September. The Madawaska River and the bush are at peak melt levels. In the 10 years we've been here, this is by far the worst.

Ah, I see.

Yes, it did manage to remove about 300,000 miles of meat off of the inboard side of the right rotor.
