Yes, Yankee land is car nation.

And they were all yank tanks, getting astoundingly good mileage of 6 miles per gallon.

Horsepower to horses, what a refreshing topic change.

Honey and I are heading out shortly for the Ozarks in southern MO.
Our 37th is tomorrow and we usually take a trip somewhere in the state.
We'll be visiting the large springs down there, including Big Spring.
Too early for good foliage color, but hope to get some nice shots with my non k3 picture taker and 18-135 glass.
Packing a paper map because we probably won't have cell coverage much of the time.
My first high school science teacher told us that 1 HP was quite a high power and that no-one had found a horse that could actually deliver 1 HP.

According to Wikipedia:
QuoteQuote:
When considering human-powered equipment, a healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp (0.89 kW) briefly (see orders of magnitude) and sustain about 0.1 hp (0.075 kW) indefinitely; trained athletes can manage up to about 2.5 hp (1.9 kW) briefly[15] and 0.35 hp (0.26 kW) for a period of several hours.[16] The Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt produced a maximum of 3.5 hp (2.6 kW) 0.89 seconds into his 9.58 second 100-metre (109.4 yd) dash world record in 2009.[17]
So I'd say it's a fair bet that pretty much every horse can deliver 1HP... from the same article:
QuoteQuote:
In 1993, R. D. Stevenson and R. J. Wassersug published correspondence in Nature summarizing measurements and calculations of peak and sustained work rates of a horse.[13] Citing measurements made at the 1926 Iowa State Fair, they reported that the peak power over a few seconds has been measured to be as high as 14.9 hp (11.1 kW)[14] and also observed that for sustained activity, a work rate of about 1 hp (0.75 kW) per horse is consistent with agricultural advice from both the 19th and 20th centuries and also consistent with a work rate of about 4 times the basal rate expended by other vertebrates for sustained activity.[13]

Well Bert. Hope springs eternal.

BTW, I watch 'Highway thru Hell' on cable. Good show and it seems to feature a lot of the regions around Hope and Golden, BC. Can be adverse driving conditions in the winter, with all that snow and mountain roads.
No surprise really, I've often seen both the section directly West of here (Rogers Pass) and directly East of here (Kicking Hose Canyon) referred to as the deadliest section of the Trans Canada Highway.

Right now, they're undergoing a huge project with some pretty challenging engineers to twin (4 lane) and straighten the highway through the canyon...

How it is currently:

With a drone view here:

And here's the plan: https://www.kickinghorsecanyon.ca/app/uploads/sites/632/2020/10/khcp4-concept-plan.pdf

They're getting some of the bigger infrastructure in now, but it'll be years before it's complete: Kicking Horse Canyon Phase... - Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4

Anyways, they have extended periods of closures where once has to take around a huge detour...

Dirty. Dirty.

Oh well, here's my 24"... umm, my 24... whatever. My next are 22 and 20, but those are for multi-image posts. The next single image post has only 17.

The only useful info I can glean from all this is that I have posted more images over the years than I could remember - and that the first non-image post on my top 50 list is in 42nd place.

I guess I'm just not very witty

It's OK if you're not witty, and it doesn't matter what the other guys say, you're OK with me.

IN keeping with the title of the thread, my wolf was taken with my K-5, The Grouse was taken with the K-1. We don't need no stinking K-3 to get good images.

We should start a thread... Images 15 likes or over.... better yet, someone could automate something in the forum software to make a slideshow of every image rated 15 likes or higher. There have been many excellent ones over the years. Who do you think would have the most, I'm guessing Ducatigaz or Kengoh.

That's a great idea, Norm. Perhaps you should formally suggest that in the Site Suggestions forum. Seriously.

Every horse is capable of 1 horsepower.

But a draft horse is capable of more torque (the real measure of power) than a Shetland pony.

We should make it a threshold of 12 likes though, cause then then I get a handful thrown in on there too

But seriously, I second Jim above, that's a great idea and you should suggest that - would be great to look through! I wonder if it would be able to be made work with hotlinked shots from flickr?
