Apparently the real military MREs are nicer, the 'civvy' version (which we get) isn't as nice.

I didn't know that was possible...

We had the regular MRE's. Ours had quite a bit of choice so we used to swap between each other. Especially the tinned stuff.

We seldom had a field kitchen. But then, I did various jobs in the army so, if I was not in base, most of the times with the work I was doing, there was no field kitchen anywhere near!

We got chocolate no-one liked. (Except me) We always swapped stuff we did not like so it was not uncommon to see a great deal of swapping just after getting a new batch of MRE's. In the 70's they even had cigarettes in the MRE's. That was before my time though. When I started donating blood, we used to get a pint for a pint, i.e. you got a pint of beer. Sadly, those days are long gone! Now you get tea and a biscuit!

I do a bit of camping, and have experimented with those dehydrated meals from outdoors shops. Conclusion - most of them are unpalatable, except for the desserts. I can see why people do bring Trangias/liquid fuel/etc when hiking and do some real pasta or rice where possible.

Back when I did a lot of flying...many years ago..I flew Braniff as often as possible for the wonderful food. It was the best in the air and beat a lot on the ground too. Sizzling steaks, fresh salads and real baked potatoes with real butter...and bacon!

Finally got some decent wings tonight...from Pizza Inn. Tender and delicious! My wing cravings were satisfied!
