I love the names: Asterix, Vitalstatistix, Cacofonix, Fulliautomatix, Getafix, Unhygienix, etc. The stories are full of puns and in-jokes, which vary completely depending on which language version you read. A bilingual friend told me the original French was quite different from, but just as funny as, the English versions I knew.

I think I've only ever read them in French, and I read a lot of them in elementary school.

I first heard of them from my high school French teacher. He was named, surname, after a place in Germany, but as good Australian boys we pronounced his first name phonetically to be Jack-wess.

Perhaps the French printed them in English too (although that seems unlikely, seeing as how they think everyone should speak French)
