In other words "a truck driver".

Drove my first big truck in my late teens. Drove all the rolling stock the power company had during the 30 years I worked in that business. I was a truck driver for 5 years, 800,000 miles.

Nowhere near bubba or redneck.

Yes sir.

So, after google being no help I dug out my 1915 Audels Automobile Guide. It seems that, although Henry Ford did not get the memo, by 1915 the conventional pedal placement had already been somehow standardised by many car manufacturers.

Direction indicators; yep, as Mark says, European cars have the stalk on the left regardless of handedness of drive. The last car I had that had the indicator stalk on the right was a mid-70s Rover 2200 (P6 design), replaced by a Ford Cortina mk 4 in the early 80s.

From the Cortina, through two Rover SD1s, a Vauxhall Carlton (the UK version of the European Opel Omega) and four Mercs - see previous discussion! - all direction stalks have been on the left.

And all since the Carlton have been automatic...

I always wondered, on right hand drive cars, do they reverse the layout of the pedals? On left hand drive, accelerator on the right, brake in the middle, clutch on the left. How about right hand drive?
Actually, the steering is reversed too: clockwise turn of the wheel steers you left while anticlockwise steers you right. At least, watching tourists from Arkansas in their first moments in a RHD car would make you think so... (safer to hire a taxi, dudes)

Here's one for Racer. It seems articulated trucks have been around since at least 1915 too.

I think this would have qualified someone for an Excellence in Big Brain Thinking award.

Having an Audel's Guide that old is quite something. Until I saw your post, I had completely forgotten about Audel's. My dad had one, I think it went back to the '30's and as a kid I recall reading through it. It had sections about old car manufacturer's such as Pierce Arrow, Hudson, Packard, as well as Chevy, Ford etc.

Unfortunately it has gone a long time ago. Think he probably got rid of it back in the '70's when my parents moved to another house. I would of liked to have had it.

I was driving along the highway, with light rain - not enough to keep the wipers running fully, but enough to need them. The car in front kept indicating at random intervals.
If you found that distracting why didn’t you cut a bend in the road, going cross-country, and getting in front. You Unimog should be able to manage that manoeuvre.

Oh they existed, back in the early days. Technology advanced to the point that everything was done from one stick, and the range boxes were operated by levers on the knob.

Ultimately the autoshift gearbox replaced most truck transmissions. Still a “manual” gearbox, but the shifting is done with a computer and air servos.

Under the driver’s accelerator foot.
Sounds like it had an autostoker.
