The 3 liter 6 cylinder they offered that year in the Outback had chain driven cams. But swapping over to it would entail much more work than fixing this engine and endeavoring to be more vigilant with the timing belt going forward.
We did look at at the opposed 6 cylinder in the Outback, some years back.. We would of gone with the automatic transmission...believe it was a traditional automatic, rather then the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic . I like a manual transmission, although I haven't had one for 40 years, aside from motorcycles. My wife prefers an automatic and she wears the pants in the family.
Didn't know the Subaru 6 cylinder had chain drive camshafts, as opposed to belts.
I liked the idea of a six, AWD and wagon, but I didn't fit too well, couldn't stretch my legs, with my my bad hockey knee, but other than that I liked the Subie.
Think the opposed six was dropped eventually, and now the line is either opposed fours, turbo or not turbo.
I've been a fan of opposed (Boxer) engines, since the '60's. I had three VW Beetles...one 1200cc, a 1300cc and a 1500cc Boxer fours.
The Subaru line sort of reminds me of the older (PV544, 122/Amazon, 240, etc.) Volvo car line. Reputation for longevity, good at rallying...kind of sports sedans, sports wagons.
