They say it does not need a flywheel. But, tolerances seem to be the bugbear. The thing requires incredibly tight tolerances. They say the computer modeling suggests they could get 4,500HP from a 250-pound three-rotor aviation version. At cost of around $50,000.
They say a car version would cost as little to produce as any other car engine due to the simplicity.

Time will tell.
Since engines that burn stuff are going out of fashion in many countries unlikely to have a solid enough market to stimulate the investment.

If you are talking boots that last and last...

International FAQS. Frequently Asked Questions at R.M.Williams®

Not cheap; dearer than I can afford (AU$595).
But Aussie stockmen love them and I have seen testimonials of many decades of wear.

At that point you're buying a name as well as the craftsmanship. Like buying a Tissot or a Rolex - both have quality Swiss movements, but one brand name commands a much higher price.

Personally I favour function over fashion/brand.

A flywheel doesn't increase torque.

It stores energy.

From Wikipedia:

A useful part of internal combustion engines.

Read more here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flywheel
But turning the flywheel uses energy.
I think I get it though, sort of............
Back in the old days, when I started as a printer, the letterpress days, I ran various presses. They all had flywheels. The hand-fed platen presses had HUGE flywheels. That I understood as some parts of the cycle of the press required substantially more force than others and the flywheel provided the momentum to carry it through that part of a cycle.

It's like a flash capacitor - the camera/flash battery doesn't have enough power to illuminate the flash at such a bright level instantaneously, so the capacitor builds up storage of power and lets it out all at once.

Well, no, that's not the one. And I can tell you it's not your Finnish friend, either.
