Congratulations on a job well done by both your and your wife and your son.

We went to three of those graduations. Two Air Force and one Army. My wife did not really like their decision to go into the military, but I told her that it was a man size decision and that all we can do is honor it. It's not like my generation where we all had to drop out and "find ourselves".

Strangely, I loved the taste of Lagavulin the first time I tried it....no cajoling required
Someone bought a round of Lagavulin at a funeral. It was my first Islay malt and a revelation. Although the price seems to have rocketed recently I would rather have two bottles of Lagavulin than one bottle of XO Champagne Cognac. Or I could have four bottles of Laphroaig

I wonder if people liking/disliking whisky comes down to genetic differences like people liking/disliking cilantro or Brussels sprouts which apparently have genetic factors involved. I personally hate both but strangely don't mind the dried form of cilantro i.e. coriander seeds, the fresh version however always tastes like soap to me.

Yep. That was my point.

Hey, if I wanted to be really insulting I could have said Coors, or Bud Lite.

This only applies to the US Budweiser of course. The Czech Budweiser is fine.

Give someone a taste of one of the Islay malts and you'll find out whether they actually like scotch or if they just claim to because they think it's trendy and sophisticated.
There are five Scotch Whisky regions - Campbeltown, Highland, Islay, Lowland and Speyside.
Campbeltown malt: I've never tried any, to my knowledge.
Speyside malts: Similar to Islay and are an acceptable alternative.
Islay malts: I like to think that sinks in places like Shangri-la, Valhalla, and Heaven have three taps; Hot, Cold, and Ardbeg. Rays of sunshine held together by water.
Highland and Lowland malts: The Budweiser of scotch. <ducking for cover now>
It was a comment you made that caused me to try scotch. I don't have the experiences you do, yet, but I will forever enjoy the unique and tasty experience that good spirits bring.

Thank you Jim.

I only drink that swill if someone else is buying, and then it is an experience I don't relish.

I think the XO has its position solely because of marketing.

All those are lowest common denominator, produced by the bean counter at the ‘brewery’.
