We have a local wildlife centre with quite a bit of acreage, a few lakes, lots of wildlife out here. About 25 years ago, they had a diorama, of our part of the world, which showed small buffalo (bison) and pronghorn antelope models…
Which reminds me: I do hope you know the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

You’d look very silly trying to wash your face in a buffalo.

They need to bring back the bison lantifrons. 4,000 (1,800 kg) pounds of bad attitude with a set of horns that would make a Texas longhorn slink home in shame. If you are ever in Bismarck, ND visit the ND Heritage Museum. It is well worth your time. Neat displays like this bison lantifrons making it a bad day for a saber tooth tiger. In the background you see a guy standing there looking at a display. The large skull is from a Bison Lantifrons. The much smaller skull to his right is the modern bison.

I'll second that. We get to Bismark a few times a year and try to see the museum on one of the trips.
As an aside; the museum is right next to the State Capitol building so besides seeing an incredible museum you'll get to see what I'm sure is the ugliest state capitol in the country.

Back in the Soviet era, the Poles were renowned for scathing political jokes, such as the following:-

Where is the finest view in all Warsaw?

From the Palace of Culture.

Why there????

Because from it you cannot see the Palace of Culture.

I agree with you. Art Deco is usually anything but art. Built between 1931 and 1934. The workers were only paid 30 cents and hour and after a string of strikes the building site was administered under martial law. It sure looks like something built by a totalitarian regime.

Reminds me of some of the mechanics I know. They drive vehicles verging on vintage.

One has a 20 year old Dodge 3500, 4WD, Cummins, . . . . . .
My Ram was new in 2001, so it is 21 years old. Old enough to drink.

I have to disagree with you there Parallax. My wife and I have visited Bismarck a number of times over the years and we absolutely love the state legislature...and all of its art deco features. I'm an art deco fan, not an expert, but a fan...and I tell you...I love wandering through the place, taking in all the nice touches.

On the other hand I have to agree with you about the museum. The museum is quite a place. They have a bookstore with quite an interesting, not easy to get books. One of them 'The Relentless Blizzard of March 1966 '. This details the savagery of probably the worst prairie blizzard I've ever encountered in my long life. It hit mostly the Northern Plains ...but covered an area from Chicago to north of Winnipeg...and all stops in between. Over 650 pages of info and pix...covers both the American and Canadian areas.

As an aside, another book I picked up...this one at the Grand Forks UND bookstore about the North American plains, prairies as we call them...is perhaps the best book on this subject I've read

Out here (Western Canada and parts of the USA) where the Buffalo (still) roam....mostly on Bison ranches....we usually call them there Bisons...Buffalo.

I wouldn't be surprised if your 2001 Ram (or Dodge as I incorrectly call them ) is still running and working 20 years from now. In fact if I cup my ear, I can hear that mighty Cummins Diesel purring away.

I do wonder how easy gasoline will be to get, say in 2035, 2040. As you say...who knows.
