I'm another one who has guitars as one of my main hobbies, although photography is probably my primary passion. All this stuff is kind of relative, I suppose. I recently went to a get-together of people from a guitar message board. Everyone brought one of their guitars for a "show & tell" session. My main acoustic guitar is a Martin J-40. These days they're selling new for around $3500 although I didn't pay anywhere near that amount because I bought mine 20 years ago. Everyone else in the group had custom made guitars that were in the $5000-$12,000 range. When it came my turn, I told a bit about my guitar and then said, "You know...most of my real world friends consider this an insanely expensive acoustic guitar. But among this crowd...not so much."
I attended an acoustic show two months ago where the median range was about $12k. The one's I liked were $32k, $27k and $19k. The next day I went to an audio show with half a million dollar systems. This hobby is a bargain compared to most.

Some of the guys at this get-together brought guitars they'd bought at Healdsburg. There were a couple of McKnight's, a couple of Baraniks, a Goodall, a Petros, a signature Santa Cruz, and a couple more that I didn't know who had built them. They're all above my pay grade.

Indeed. I see guys with large pickups and two or more snow sleds, each would have been equivalent to purchasing a very very nice long lens, or two.

It was cars until my back couldn't handle the seating position
It was audio until my ears went
It's currently photography until my eyes go.
