Any Preference for what part of the image the 100% crop is from? Center? Corners?

Didn't you get your K3 yet ?

EDIT: Because some folks are too (___) to be bothered with a useful plugin to show them the EXIF data in every image, I've taken screenshots of what I see when I right-click and choose "Show EXIF." There is no reason for me to repeat this in the future. Go get a plugin for your browser if you want more information than what I write. They even have EXIF viewing plugins for phones!
Got that !

About the 12,800 ISo shot: was it "that bad" before you've used the NikDefine software? I mean, it is taken with a macro lens afterall, so this is really good.
Hey Jacques,

Here are 100% crops of the 12,800 ISO shot, with and without the Nik Dfine2 treatment:

From raw, no NR applied:

With Nik Dfine2 applied:

About noise: I really don't think the ISO 12800 looks that bad, and can be rescued pretty easily (just not so well with Adobe default tools). However, I've noticed that everything from ISO 800 on up needs some sort of NR, while my K-5 shots only need it for certain ISO 1600 shots, and generally after 3200.

Also, if I push the shadows up on any K-3 image (even ISO 100) there is visible luminance noise to be tamed. Never had this on the K-5 at low ISOs, but it seems to be par for the course with the K-3. Of course, it might just be something related to how "dumb" processing software treats the DNGs right now, and after a profile has been created, the noise and DR might be better... who knows?

Interesting!

In spite of the (expected) noise in the original shot, it looks as if the details were rather well retained after "denoising" : no "blotching" as it often happens during PP.

I would also ask: does it (luminance oise) have anything to do with the greater number of "pixels" (24 vs. 16) ?? I am no wiz on the technical bits, so I thought I'd ask.
It is true that shots taken with my K5 seldom need any sort of "denoising" at up to ISO 1600 and at times even at ISO 3200 (given that there was no exposure problems during the shot).

I'm sure the noise is related to the number of pixels on the APS-C sensor, as well as the newness of the camera (no raw profiles), and also to what Pentax engineers wanted to achieve (they tend to allow noise to preserve detail).

So here is another post about the K-3 noise (at least as of Nov. 1, 2013 - with no mass-market processing software recognizing or profiling the PEFs).

And since this is a "post your K-3 images" thread, here is the full image I talk about in that NR post (note that the splotchy neutrals are due to jpeg compression and sRGB colorspace - I shoot in AdobeRGB and process in 16-bit):

I prefer the noisy image to the plastic look. It's usually best to leave a bit of noise in the final result, just taming it down a bit looks more natural.

Just curious, what if you shot in PEF at higher ISO and processed it with the utility that came with the camera. Since the Pentax camera utility uses SilkyPix engine, I'm curious how it handles the noise. I'm a SilkyPix pro5 user so I'm wondering how well the first version of the engine does.

I'm gonna try that this weekend. I've never loaded any of the Pentax supplied software before, since I'm so immersed in Photoshop and ACR. (I loaded Sigma Photo Pro for my DP2 Merrill, only because it's the only software to read the files!) It will be an interesting comparison, and maybe a harbinger of things to come...

That, in my opinion, can't possibly be an ISO12800 shot with no NR. I don't see any chroma noise at all. Ordinarily, on my K-5, I'll see it start to creep in at 800-1600.

Maybe you didn't apply any intentional NR on that shot, but it's occurring somewhere.

It's gotta be.

Nonetheless, that's pretty good for 12800.

Good catch! You were right. I simply never visited the ACR defaults, and it seems 8.1 applies a default value of 25 Color NR (with 50 Color Detail) to every shot. I turned that off, and there's the chroma noise... (where's that embarrassed emoticon... )

More and more K-3 shots are appearing on Flickr.

A quick question : Is the DA 50mm f1.8 really that bad when stopped down to f8 ? WTF is going on in the top right corner of this one ?

At original size it looks like motion blur - don't see it on the left side so maybe wind or sr? Shot is at 1/15.
What I would check is other shots by that user with the same lens, is there a pattern of blurry upper right?

This one at f8 looks better. Shot at1/30. http://www.flickr.com/photos/antoine-h-photography/10613934686/in/photostream/
