Using the internal camer port to read out both cards simultaniously I serveral times produced a blocked camera. Only way to restert was to remove the battery.

There seems to be a Firmware bug - hopefully it is corrected soon.

Pls outline the exact steps involved to produce this problem, and the hardware used.
(This may help others test the issue on their own cameras).

- 2 cards in camera
- USB3 Cable commected 1st to camera, than to PC (Win 7/64) --> 2 file windows open
- Copy Folder from RAW-Card to PC --- blocks communication
- Unable To read more from JPG-Card
--> no files transfered to PC

On this try to reproduce the error camera was not locked, but meanwhile I had this error 3 or 4 times :-(

After reconnection camera was blocked display "Pc-5" and after switch off "596" - have to remove battery again

So your sequence of operations was [with some questions]:

• two [identical, and formatted?] SD cards were placed in card slots SD1 and SD2;
• the camera was set to save 'Seperate RAW/JPEG';
• the USB Connection mode set in camera was the default 'MSC' mode;
• then camera was turned off;

• USB 3.0 cable was inserted into camera, with a USB 3.0 Micro B plug on camera side, and on the other side of the cable, a USB Type A (or USB 3 A-type?) plug was inserted into the computer;
• the computer was running a full USB 3 compatible card, on a Win 7 64 PC;
• you were logged onto Windows 7 with Administrator privileges [?];
• once the cable was connected, the camera was turned on;

• Windows 7 then detected the camera, and assigned two USB drive letters to the camera;
• in Windows 7, you opened two windows in Windows Explorer, and then were able to browse each new drive in a window, one for the RAW drive SD1, andother for the JPEG drive SD2;
• using Windows Explorer, you then attempted to copy some files from the USB RAW drive SD1 to a folder location on your PC, but were unable to. [Did Windows display any error message?];
• using Windows Explorer, you were also unable to read from the USB JPG drive SD2 [but could you see the files, or just not copy them? and was there an error message from Windows?]
• as a result, you were unable to transfer any files from the camera to the PC via the USB cable.
• repeated attempts to copy files the same way failed.

Is this accurate?

Also:

• If you use only one drive on the camera (eg SD1), can you then successfully copy files from camera to PC, or does the operation only fail when you try and copy from two drives simultaneously?
  
• Have you tried another cable - perhaps an older USB2 cable (micro-A <> USB A)?
  
• Have other USB 3 devices worked successfully on your PC?
  
• Do you have any trouble when removing the cards from the camera and copying them to the PC using an external card reader (or a card-reader built into your PC)?

Sorry for the length. But sometimes even simple problems can have lots of systems behind them.

That would have been my first question. It is likely that the deadlock originated with your PC, though the camera's implementation should have been robust enough to recover.

Sounds like a file or device contention issue within Explorer and the USB3 driver, either in camera or in Windows.

Do you get the same issue if, for example, you open up an external USB3 hard drive or thumb drive, then open two windows on it within Explorer, and try and simultaneously copy material from each window onto your PC?

Anyway, a simple workaround to your problem seems to be to just copy from each disk (SD1, SD2) serially, one at a time, using just one window within Explorer, rather than trying to copy from both disks at once.

You could probably debug this using tools like perfmon or some of the sysinternals tools like Process Monitor or Process Explorer. It would be particularly interesting to see what is going on when Explorer hangs.

I suggest that you report the problem to your local Pentax support people. The camera should recover better from USB problems, even if the fault may lie with Microsoft and Windows.

It will be interesting to find out if there are any Apple or Linux K-3 users who can do simultaneous file copying from SD1 and SD2 to their Mac or Linux PC using a USB 3 cable ... If Mac and Linux have no problems, it's a MS issue. If Mac and Linux have problems, it's more likely to be a Pentax or USB3 issue.

Just tried a "double transfer" via USB3 on my Ubuntu 13.10 box, SD1 and SD2 transferred simultaneously without a hitch.

most common (if not only for a while) chipset for motherboards to provide usb3 was very problematic, unusable for many things for long time, updated drivers resolved lots of issues (some are still left) so try updating your usb3 drivers
