K-3 DA* 60-250 AF Tracking Sample Shot Sequence Sports for your analysis

Hello, I am new posting to the forum, although I have been enjoying reading.

I read some threads discussing K-3 AF Tracking,

I am not a pro, just enjoy photography as hobby

Here is a sequence of shots i took for your K-3 AF tracking analysis. How do you think the K-3 DA*60-250 combo did on this case?

Event = F1 2013 US Grand Prix (cars running at over 200 Km/hr. )

Camera was set with recommend settings as per K-3 in-depth review on this forum.
Additional settings:
Exposure mode = P
Program LIne = Sports icon
AF-C
Focus Priority
SEL-L (Select center point and have expanded zone of 27 points)
RAW
High - Continuous Shooting.

Method: I focused on road near were car is going to show up, then as soon as car shows focus I focus again with center point on car itself, then shot non-stop following the car until is gone. I did not have any problem of AF speed with this lens in this case (i do not know about other sports yet, I will try soccer on the weekend). Buffer and shots per second on this camera is great, i was able to shot all the sequence non-stop in RAW.

Hi Rudy:

Looks quite good to me. The DA 60-250 is not a fast focussing lens so you did well.

are these all the shots in this sequence? or you just posted the keepers? (of that sequence)
I just wanted to cross check with the 67% keeper rate in the PF K-3's review. Results here

These are the shots in that sequence, nothing removed or added, only converted from raw to JPEG and uploaded.

Very nice. It kept focus even if it wasn't centered in the view. Where I have seen issues is when the focus is closer in; for example standing at the side of the road with a car coming towards you, passing and then going away. Closer in with a longer lens the dof is narrower and the focus throw is larger. It may be a factor of the lens focusing speed.

I understand the case you describe. In this case there was little of bit of that too, but not as extreme as in the case you describe.

In this case, this section of the track is a winding road. The first 2 or 3 shots the car is kind of coming towards the lens. Then the road goes left, the distance between the car and lens increases, then turns right so the distance between car and lens decreases, then again the distance to the car will increase as the road opens to the left again before the final right to get out of this section.

Was that the F1 race in Texas? I was watching it on Tv yesterday and I said man If I had my K-3 I would get some fantastic shots of that race. great set of pics love the colors great job!!!!!

I'm not discounting the accomplishment at all. The speeds of these cars is very high, and it would be a challenge to pan successfully. It seems the body/lens combination did what you asked it to do. I suppose I'm interested in finding the limits of the K-3. It would be a worthy test to see how close to the track you could be before it starts losing focus. It may be that the skill of the operator may be the limitation; it is a real challenge to acquire focus and pan to follow a fast moving subject across 160 degrees field of view. If it is in fact the skill of the operator that is the limiting factor, great.

Any idea what framerate you get with the AF-C?

The K-5 was about 2,8 fps with AF-C and a changing scene like this.

Looking at the exif info the first frame was shot at 13:28:20 and the last at 13:28.25. The total number of frames in the sequence is 24, so the math would result in a framerate of 24/5= 4.8 fps.

Yes, 4.8.fps in RAW , thank you for doing the calculation.
