These are with no noise reduction and no sharpening. The photos would of course appear much better with the proper amount of sharpening an luma/chroma NR but here I removed them to reveal the noise and detail.

Click on images for full size version.

ISO3200 1/30s f5.6 Pentax 18-135 WR
No PP except turning down sharpening, luma NR and chroma NR to zero as requested.

ISO3200 1/60s F2.8 Tamron 90mm macro
No PP except turning down sharpening, luma NR and chroma NR to zero as requested.

ISO 4000 1/320s f8.0 Sigma 150-500 @500
This photo has some rather extreme PP to avoid blowing out details of the surf (for which I also underexposed somewhat) as well as to mitigate the very poor contrast caused by the salt spray mist. To make things more difficult this is actually a crop about 2/3 width, effectively magnifying the image (and the noise) somewhat.
As with the other two I turned down sharpening, luma NR and chroma NR to zero to reveal the noise.

The chroma NR becomes quite ugly when turned down to zero but I never see any reason to turn it down as it does no noticeable harm to the image even when turned up pretty high. In these photos it is only the last one though that suffers when chroma NR is turned off completely but keep in mind that the rather extreme boosting of shadows and saturation makes this shot equivalent to a much higher ISO than the 4000 at which I shot it.

PS: I'm having some trouble uploading the last two full size images - it seems to be taking forever, so if you cannot see them you may need to check again later.

A few K-3 high-ISO's from a recent gig:

Tamron 17-50, 50 mm 1/125 f3.2 6400

Dee Dee Lavell opening

Tamron 17-50, 50mm 1/125 ƒ/3.2 ISO 6400

Lola Montgomery

K-3 performs about the same as the K-5 under these circumstances. Focus was certainly much more confident though.

He's shooting weddings using JPEGs?!?! Correct me if I'm wrong, but those NR settings don't apply with RAW, right?

That's right. The settings he is talking about relate to the JPEG modes only.

But I still don't buy his argument. I always shoot RAW+, and to date looking at my JPEGs side-by-side with my DNG's, normally I can't see any difference. And (theoretically) according to his argument, the NR 'softness' issue should reveal itself in JPEG even when shooting flash at 800 ISO with the K-3, but that just isn't the case.

Pentax K-3: REDEMPTION - YouTube
I think his name is Ed. I appreciate his identifying the problem with the AUTO setting for noise reduction,

But his disparaging of the 50-135 is way off base. My DA50-135 is incredibly sharp and acts like a series of prime lenses. The 135 FL is the weakest point of the zoom, but even there, the DA50-135 was barely beat out at 200% when i compared it in a test against a Pentax A 135. On the other hand, 135 FL of the tamron 70-200 is sort of in the middle of its range. In any case, I've got several zooms including primes, and the DA50-135 is extraordinary.

He may need to dial in his AF for that lens.
A Tamron 28-75 I have is super sharp no adj on my K-5's but required -10 on my K-3.
Yet my Sigma 70-200 is spot on with the K-3.

This woodpecker shot on an overcast day under a dark tree canopy.

ISO 3200, Jpeg with NR AUTO setting, lens is DA*300 @ f5.6, 1/1000 shutter.

IMO I believe the K-5 would have had a less noisy shot out of camera but I did not bring it along to compare. Will have to run some controlled tests later.

First shot is original out of camera, resized only. Second shot is cropped a bit and added NR and sharpened, and bumped up the exposure in Lightroom 4.

Same shots as in the previous post, but this time processed by DxO 9 PRIME noise reduction engine. On average it took DxO 9 two and a half minutes to process one file.

The cleanup looks good, specially noticeable on the tail shot. 2.5 minutes seems longish though.

The PRIME noise reduction is very slow even on powerful machines. Although I must admit that the resulting image is considerably better than after the standard noise reduction.
