It is painted on. I scratched mine and there is a small scar on the top of the camera.

Ron, I couldn't help myself after I got my favorite lens (Takumar 85/1.9) refinished in silver. The EXIF data shows the manufacturing date of my new silver edition as 17 Feb 2014, so you are right, there had to be more than the initial production run.

Where do you get a lens re-finished in silver. and how much did it cost please?

Thanks. It is my favorite lens. Forum member dcshooter did the refinish work, and it is outstanding. I will let him tell you the cost, but I think it is fair.
