Handheld astrophotography

No, that's not a typo. Never thought such a thing would be remotely possible but have a look at this picture (click image for full size picture):

Not only is it hand-held but I was standing on a ro-ro ship sailing at 12 knots.

It won't win any prizes for image quality or anything but I think it is quite extraordinary what the image stabiliser is capable of.

It is shot at 1/10 of a second at ISO 51200 with Sigma 50mm F1.4.EX DG HSM.

PS: If the image doesn't show up try again later as for some reason my picture uploads are working very slowly.

These are some other photos taken from on board, all handheld:

While still moored (1)

While still moored (2)

Started moving, still in port

At sea

Just before arriving at destination

I've tried this too. Like you said, those pictures will not bring any award, not even some cheering, but is a real pleasure to make.

These are extraordinarily wonderful! A touch of post processing noise reduction and perhaps a bit of sharpening would make them even better. I would have thought that you were up on a tripod.

For that big moon i made about 20, until I get it right. Anyway, the exposure time was short because was enough light, I have others, with stars, and 1/10 exposure time, that are shaky. It's about training.

Excellent edge definition, but there's no inner detail e.g. the fine detail on the fur is missing.

Also there appears to be insufficient colour depth (3-bit?)

At first I didn't see where one photo ends and another one starts. My thoughts were "is that a multi-exposure photo or I am hallucinating"

Really nice photos. I'll have to try that when I get a cloudless evening over here, some light pollution here though.

Vortexian, sorry, but I didn't stick them together. That's the site engine. I'm disappointed by this look to, but I don't know what to do.

Anyway, the photos are superb :-)

And the site rendering specific made them even more interesting.
